When I was a kid, there was a single kid in my whole school that had a peanut allergy. One.

Now, when I drop my kids off at preschool, every single door has the massive lists of what can't be brought in because almost every kid is allergic to them.

What happened between 1978, when I started school, and 2014?

My theory is it's the pill. Women's liberation and readily accessible birth control. I think it changed how women chose their mate.

By removing the inevitable pregnancy and making it optional, women chose who they were with on purely emotional reasons and began to ignore the biological ones developed over eons of evolutionary development.

The result is more sickly kids. This also could explain the higher divorce rate. When women go off the pill, they realize that they aren't attracted to their husbands anymore. Reciprocally, men are removed from the breeding role, and begin to have a wandering eye for another potential mate. Women do the same when they wake up one morning and realize that their mate isn't a match for their biology.

I think that men evolved to plant their seed wherever they could and women evolved to be the selectors. Our biology ties into our emotional well being. If we deny our biology, it follows we wouldn't be emotionally happy.

I subscribe to the theory Turkey mentioned. People aren't exposed to enough bacteria/illness and we haven't produced the antibodies to cope with them.
