i've never actually sat down and tried to actually play and beat minesweeper in my life

You'll come across scenarios like these in Advanced/Expert but they tend to have two or three mines hiding instead of one so it lets you use process of elimination with the remaining mines left. It's not as 50/50 as easy mode is. It always bites me in the ass when I do get to it though because I go through the game not flagging the mines and then when I have that situation I have to go back and flag every single one to figure out how many I have left.

You should play Hexcells instead. It's like minesweeper, but without the catastrophic failure if you pick the wrong tile.
