I don't understand Anime.

I get that some of you really like it. I just see cartoons. Some well drawn, others meh. But just cartoons. On top of this there's a giant cultural barrier that prevents me from really getting half the material.

Overall I prefer other forms of entertainment. Might be just me.

There are really interesting and emotionally charged stories that are possible with drawn media that would be damn near impossible any other way. They are few and far between though, mostly just weeb shit.

cultural differences can be interesting
anime on the whole tends to covers a wider spectrum of subject matter than western animation while still benefiting from the abstraction of animation
some people like cartoons, and you're not going to find the same variety of them (not labeled comedy and/or for children) in an english speaking country

Just a reminder that anime is simply a medium, not a genre. I agree that the culture barrier throws potential viewers off, most of the really well done anime made in the past never used cultural references specific to Japan (Cowboy Bebop, GiTS, Gundam). Gundam in particular is notably popular not because it's just a giant fighting robot show, but because the political/social issues that are brought up in the show is timeless and not specific to Japan.

There really needs to be more anime of that type, instead of getting another Darker Than Black, Spice And Wolf, Eden of The East, we get fucking Generic moe blob SoL cancer that has been plaguing the industry ad nauseam for well over 15 years now. It's a shame when I'm not even bothering looking at the season line up because every show is filled with cliche garbage, right now the only title I'm hyping for is Shin Eva which doesn't even have a release year yet.

Given the fact that i've preferred spending my time interacting with stories told through a bunch of 3D models on a screen where most of the time is spent inexplicably slaughtering people from when I was young, I don't find anime weird at all. Maybe i'm biased from watching a shit ton now, but i'm sure you recognise my point regardless.

What is there not to understand? It's like a regular show, but instead its animated. Like take a look at some Japanese/Korean Live action shows (it was against my will) and you'll see that they really arent much different to anime.

It's a cultural thing.

Jo: Literally episodes 1-6 reanimated from the ground up. The final battle with Ramiel is sick. Easily my favorite of the three currently out, which is why I own a copy of both 1.01 on DVD and 1.11 on BD.

Ha: Second favorite, encompasses Episodes 8-20. Very action packed, some of the characters are switched around and Mari is added. Final half hour is very Shounen-like (but there was a reason for it). Shinji goes GAR at the end to save Rei from Zeruel.

Q: All new material. Literally 40 minutes of "WTF is going on?" followed by half hour of gay piano playing, followed by another 20 minutes of bullshit without explanation. Everybody thinks it's a masterpiece because it's grim dark like episodes 21-24, but everyone who's seen NGE should have saw it coming a mile away. People hate it (justifiably) because characters drop the idiot ball in order to advance the story and a lot of the story is a downright lie. The footage we see at the end of Ha in the Next Time Preview for Q does not appear at all in the film. OST is bitchin awesome though and my BD copy of 3.33 came with the OST. I could make an entire thread on why Q is crazy balls to the walls WTF.

i watch a lot of live action kaiju movies and more traditional asian cinema in addition to anime. none of the live action tv shows ive tried to watch make much sense due to cultural barriers but there are some exceptions like the original ninja warrior
