Let's say under $40k new. What do you suggest?

I'm really just looking for something economical to drive around town for work. I do a lot of driving, but not much in the way of long distance, so range is nice, but not a dealbreaker.

The people who buy electric cars are those who can afford new batteries in a pinch or a new car in approximately 8 to 10 years when the batteries naturally go.
