sometimes people apologize to make peace, rather than to express any genuine remorse—like a way of saying, "i'm not sorry, but i want to ease the friction between us anyway," without actually saying that, because that's not how people talk—is this incorrect

No it's not incorrect. Although chances are that, if you are doing so, you are at least a little bit sorry about that.

That said, I would rather say this directly, even though that's not how people talk, because I don't like lying and my intentions would be clear this way.

I'm not much into wrestling, although I like watching it sometimes, so I don't know. I think AEW has still a long way to go though.
