Certain animals used in agriculture have significantly better qualities of life and higher populations due to farming.
How do you measure the life quality of livestock?

And I'm not sure what population has to do with anything. It's certainly not a benefit.

We designated 120 million acres as "critical habitat" thus protecting a significant amount of land in the northern Alaskan coastal waters, thus helping polar bears avoid becoming technically endangered.
And did we do that for the polar bears, or did we do that for us? Most of the time, these measures taken to "save" endangered species isn't because we care at all about the well-being of these animals, but because without them, it would be a hefty blow to us in the grand scheme.

I mean sure if there's a normal to compare it to, but if you're claiming no one is normal wouldn't that then throw out the concept of normalcy?
if no one is normal, then no one is normal

yes
that's what i'm saying <_<
We need a new word then, abnormal implies normality exists in the first place which we're now saying it doesn't...hmmm
i don't really agree. normalcy is a concept regardless of whether there are people who fall under that concept. thus abnormal people fail to fall under that concept. i think the concept can still exist without people who fall under it.
I don't think the concept can exist without anything to base it on, you can't have the idea of normalcy being something that doesn't actually exist. If everyone fell outside of the concept of normalcy then that would become the new normal, so not being normal  would be normal. Which makes no sense.
doesn't the concept of god exist w/out anything to base it on? (not trying to start shit here anyone).
God isn't the same, God would be based on a concept of perfection which is the opposite of normalcy. Perfection can't exist.
idk, in a way i equate normality with perfection. complete normality can't exist, but it's something to strive for all the same. very similar to perfection in my mind.

like, everyone has quirks that exclude them from being 'normal'. but people tend to hide or ignore these quirks to appear more normal.

Nah normalcy should be a slight range of accepted quirks that incorporates as many people as possible. It's not so much that people hide from them as they accept they have them and others do too so we all ignore them. Perfection would be the lack of those qualities which is more or less impossible.

I don't think normalcy is a definable trait itself, but rather the absence of overt traits that carry a stigma. Also the earth doesn't give a fuck, parasites have long been among the most successful species and won't be going anywhere soon.

Tell me something, what have human beings done that actually benefit this planet and other life aside from just benefiting itself?
Practically everything "good" we could ever do involves cleaning up a mess we've made, which makes finding benefits a little bit difficult.

Since Meta's list was crap, I thought I'd make my own:

We vaccinated smallpox and polio.
We built cars, airplanes, and ships to transport goods across the world (we may not always use them for good, but...).
We have very successfully perpetuated the meme of recycling.
We have machines that can build other machines that can build other machines, effectively obsolescing human labor.
We gave the public complete access to the Internet--the most valuable medium we have to exercise our freedom of expression.
This movement exists.

And I'm sure there's a couple others I'm forgetting.

Time and time again, people have something fucked up with them, you're only considered normal in this world if you share the majority of problems that are common. Otherwise you're either fucking considered crazy or mental, or even a misfit.

It is only that you made this thread to seek common ground with others.

So make the world a better place rather than complain about it, if you want people to stop treating the different differently then just lead by example.

Quote
There are over a million types of personalities and combinations, but the way I see it, the vast majority of people are shit.
Says everyone ever, people love to generalise. When you actually get to know people, they oddly enough turn out to be generally tolerable creatures. Sure you get a few thoroughly unpleasant ones in the mix but the reason they seem to make up the majority is because you notice the guy spitting at the old lady more than you notice the 200 people who walked past you on the street earlier.

Quote
This species alone is parasitic. Humans take all the resources the earth has to offer until there is nothing left. We take and take and take and never give.
Well technically we aren't taking anything, we are just repurposing it. It's not leaving the planet, just being turned into various more useful things. We can certainly go about this in a less damaging manner though, but the species itself is not parasitic as such. A successful parasite will live in symbiosis rather than just rampage through the place like a coffee and vindaloo mixer.

Quote

Do you want anecdotal or just a few general ones?
RSPCA
RPSB
Greenpeace (tenuous)
Carbon Neutral programs
The holoc- I mean uhh endangered species programs, medical care for wildlife, sanctuaries etc.

Anecdotal
Rescuing injured birds in the garden, feeding the birds in winter, putting water out for them and the like.

If you want a nice little way to view humans as moderately less shite than the hatred trailer's view of them, then just think about the propensity for the species to care for other living creatures. You see it rarely in other species, lions adopting antelopes (Crazy, I know) and Wolves raising meatbag children etc but on the whole most species on the planet look out for their own kind, whereas humans act* as caretakers for any and every species, not just the cutesy ones either. People find even the ugliest abominations adorable in a weird kind of way, what sort of quirk of nature is it that makes a species inclined to care for and raise the orphaned young, injured and dying of other completely unrelated species?

Not a common one that's for sure <_<

*Can act, not all but generally people do. Even if their method of kindness involves a bullet to the head to put it out of it's misery, which is unpleasant but it is still a kindness in some situations.

fair enough, but i mean, what struck me about the things you cited the most is that none of them are particularly groundbreaking in terms of just how much of life on earth it actually helped

you can talk about how great animal preservation is, but in my opinion, intent matters
and the truth is, none of us actually care at all about animals--it's just that they benefit us

which is more an example of our selfishness than it is not

so it was just the pretense of, "humans don't suck! we help animals! we're selfless" that left a bad taste in my mouth
and maybe that's not even what you were trying to get at--that was just how i read into it

the first thing that came to mind for me was the vaccination thing
because that was huge, and they saved not only millions, but basically every generation since then

so i was just wondering about your priorities, i guess

I took the question as being consequentially focused.

Polar bears don't give a fuck if we're saving them for selfish motivations. Well, they probably don't care at all, but you know what I mean.

Na. You don't hate people. Because if you did, you'd be shooting up a church or something. Strong dislike is a much better glove to fit that hand.

Now, I'm no fan of people either. I'm no fan of our flaws. I'm no fan of how no matter what you do, you can't really win, with people. I'm no fan of our poorly constructed system and ways of doing things.

But, it's a guilty pleasure. Because not everybody's shitty. People surprise you. And that's nice. It's nice to find aspects and things about people that you can enjoy.

And most of all, hell, I would seriously like to see any other sapient species do better than us right now. Because, we're just taking our first steps. There are still, a hell of a lot of rough edges to smooth out with us as a species. Is it neccessarily nice to look at? Certainly not. It's rather depressing.

But those little rare finds among people are nice. Which is, primarily, why I'm here, right now.

As sick as I am of talking, in all forms, people here still surprise me. I still learn from them.

So while there's lots of ugly stuff about people, there's good things too. And for me at least, seeing those, finding those, and experiencing that, makes people worth it. Nobody's perfect Deci.

I'm certainly not saying that everybody has a peachy side to them. But I am saying that the rare people you find that do make up for it.

And maybe that's a problem with today. With everything being so interconnected, all those channels open. You're going to hear about a hell of a lot of garbage. Which, comes down to an old point of mine.

As a species, we're designed to look at the bad things. Because in the past, focus directed at bad things, aka threats, helped save our asses. Focus, and thinking, and planning, being aware of the threat, saved and helped us.

Biologically, we are actually not designed to function with settling down. We don't look at good things so much. We don't focus on them for long because a good thing, is a good thing.

It's not a threat. So it's okay if it slips under the radar.

Which creates a very, very convincing illusion that we're all in fact surrounded by bullshit. When we're not. It's just that all the decent things go unheard of. Decent people, don't have spotlights of attention over them.

And that's why it seems like there's so much trash in the world.

Because nobody is built to give a shit about good things. It's not really our fault. It's just an old adaptation mechanism from older times.
