started this job 3 months ago. thats usually the "probabtion" period where they try you out and see if youre a good fit for the establishment. they told me id be making 14 an hour when I started, and "we'll see how it goes from there."

3 months have gone and im going to ask for a raise by the fourth (dont want to seem too greedy) but im not sure how much to ask for. ideally, if theycould match what i was making when i left construction (20/hour) id be ecstatic. but im also realistic and thats quite the jump from 14. im thinking 17 or 18 would be more reasonable, but should i negotiate and start at 20 to bring them down? or actually go for the 20/hour?

theres no contract. they never specifically stated "3 months", thats just what i gathered from talking to people. theyre keeping me on because theyre exceptionally happy with my work.

to put things in perspective, i got my first raise in construction after 2 months, going from 15 to 20 an hour.

I could see asking for a $2-3 raise, but just realize that asking for $20 is almost a 50% increase, and you probably should have negotiated harder if that's what you were making in a similarly skilled job before this one. If you're not getting any benefits you can leverage that too.

What are more senior guys at the shop making?

theres only about 5 of us, and i cant imagine my boss is making any more than 30 or 40 an hour. one of the guys whos been here a year, who i am just as skilled as, is making 20. the other guy is making 22.

also keep in mind comstruction is seasonal here so you only work half the year and it was cash pay, meaning theres more reason to pay the workers more. most guys make 30 an hour in construction, whereas i was making 20.

Hmm, you could probably get away with asking for $20 based on your skill, but expect a counter offer. Skill can be tricky because it sounds like it's still technically "unskilled" work (i.e., no degree or trade school required), and if costs get too high he could just hire someone new to replace you (despite the learning curve and your obvious skill). idk though. You really have to feel the culture of the shop to know; if it sounds like asking for a raise is the norm, definitely go for it.

see, i thought 8 months would be the best point to ask for the promised raise, but literally everyone (folks, friends, coworkers, family) has told me the same thing "3 months for your first raise, then once a year after that"


but yeah, there are things that i know and things that i dont. im still fairly young and i want to do things right. and i always strongly consider the advice of those more experienced than me.

yeah, im pretty sure im just gunna start by asking them to match what i was making before. if they honour it, i win. if i make 17 off that, i win.

if they give me 15 or 16 ill be pretty pissed though.

I guess it works different in US.

Do what PSU said. What's the worst that can happen? Sure the employer will raise an eyebrow, but its worth to take that risk - who knows, maybe they will take you serious and give you that 21/h?
Maybe have a justification for the request at the ready too?

If a raise was discussed during the hiring process, after a probational period, then three months is plenty of time. Most of this should have been ironed out when you were hired though, you want to get it in writing as well.

As it stands it doesn't sound like you were given a probation period, unless that's just how it works in Canada.

You shouldn't expect to earn what someone who has been there for a year makes when you've been there three months regardless of skill. There's a pecking order to these things and time spent with the company means a lot.

Granted, every company is different, especially when you're talking about small companies.

Seventeen is a very reasonable request, with another request at a year for the twenty. It's been my experience that asking for more than what you desire is a double edged sword. They may just flat out give you the twenty, but you may also offend them.

It's a tricky situation but if I were you I would ask for seventeen an hour and then ask for your next raise at the end of your first year. The more you learn the more money you can ask for. More responsibilities equals more money.

eh, theres more to why i expect a similar pay but i wont get into it. obviously if everything between the two of us was the same sans time spent with company itd be different.

3's too early. Can't give advice on when to drive that. Most of my work was done with self employed contractors with a rate of take it or leave it.

But if it were me and I was interested in a raise, I'd wait six months to ask.
