How many of you would struggle to pay for unforseen costs?

it's kind of just the nature of an unforeseen cost, i find
In your experience or in general?
in general, unless you're one of the lucky ones and have disposable income
It's strange to think of people with disposable income as particularly lucky in a developed country.
it's sad, i don't know about strange

Signature goes here.
I see many middle-aged people in those kinds of positions; at that age very few are attempting to work on their actual career, and even fewer would do so with a company like McDicks. So it makes me wonder what the Hell are they doing there? It's one thing if you lost a previous job, but there's one guy I work with who has been doing the same thing for 40 years, just retail. Like, what the fuck? If he wasn't content in his position, he would've been gone long ago. I only spend one year in my position before I really start getting agitated about not having something harder to work on, I could never imagine doing that for 39 more.

My guess would be that few people in that position are content in staying there forever.

So I'm gathering there's around 4 people who could and 5 who couldn't pay a $1000 emergency without having to go into debt. That's (slightly) beating the odds.

Do you guys see this changing any time soon and do you have plans to accomplish that?
I am planning on having $5,000 in emergency funds by this time next year and another $5,000 of investment money. But if needed I can use the other $5000 for emergency so $10,000 total.

I can't use an image in my signature? That blows, you all blow.
It's a mixed bag. When I was working, yeah I could cover costs for a bit. Shit happens, and if it gets really bad you could always borrow if you absolutely had to. That's what I did when I had to fix my old truck just after I moved to Utah. Had to cover 5,000 in repair so I took out credit till I could withdraw money from an insurance account to pay off the credit.

Right now when I am unemployed? Yeah, I'd be fucked through and through. Had I not sold my old truck I would be up shit creek right now. Unable to afford my truck payment, and unable to afford tags. I guess this whole time of being unemployed has been an "unexpected expense" in that I am at a net loss each month. Till I get a new job, be it here in California or out of state, I am going to really be in trouble.

You're right. Taxes were easy, and jobs were plentiful. I'd be back right now if I could find a job willing to give me time to move back out there.

I used to have around 4k usd that was just sitting around, but somehow I spent it all at the start of uni. The last amount of money I had went to books.

Had to buy a laptop, phone, books, EVEN MORE BOOKS, and I bought a gaming chair before uni started. I had like 1k Sek which is around 107 usd before my student loans came in, and two months later I'm up to 2k USD. I'm not planning on spending that money 'cause I'm gonna see if I can buy a villa with it by taking a house loan and rent out the rooms when I graduate, and if the money isn't enough I'll just work and add to those funds. I don't know much about laws, but in uni we're right now studying law, and I have bought a law book so that's p exciting. I keep learning about contracts and shit and it's really interesting stuff.

The interest is something like 0,16 % so either way I'm safe. If I can't use the money, I can just pay the loan back.

Money for me is not tight but it's not right.  I tend to have enough to pay the bills and invest some but when it comes to fun money it's lacking

Hmm...
I hoard money just like you'd think I would, so yeah. I could pretty much afford to cover any sort of emergency I can think of.

They say you are what you eat, but I don't remember eating mYsELF
I wouldn't have any trouble paying off 500. I'd say my max right now would be about 3K but that's because I've only been working a couple months. My work pays for breakfast and lunch and also provides travel to and from the company, and I have no debt to pay off so my only major expense is rent which really isn't that much, so it's kinda easy for me to save atm.
