Unless you're listening to screamo you're not always supposed to connect with the message.

you're supposed to "get it." and i don't imagine many people do, so i'm wondering where the infatuation comes from.

You can empathize with people from different walks of life without experiencing their hardships first hand.

No, you can only sympathise with them. There's a difference.

Also, I didn't suggest that his hardships are what disallow me from enjoying his stuff. I'm suggesting that the cultural distance between us is makes it hard to determine what's attractive about his music to so many people, particularly white people, who are even further away from him.

You don't have to live through someone else's exact experience to empathize with them. You may not have been through the same things, but you can certainly have experienced the same emotions and feelings and in turn connect with someone's expression on that level.

Yeah chief, I meant empathize.

What about his culture is so different from your own? What themes or stories does he express through his music that make it hard for you to find his music attractive?

Institutionalised racism and growing up around gang violence.

Not really. You can only assume you've felt something similar. I prefer not to assume.

One of the most basic forms of empathy is emotional empathy. If someone is expressing an emotion you've experienced then it's not unreasonable to assume you've felt the same or something very similar. There may be a virtually infinite number of emotional triggers that are different for everyone, but the emotions themselves are something that unifies us all.

yes and no

i've come to decide that our emotional lives aren't that different from each other in the way that you described

compare the angriest i've been all year in my sedentary life to the angriest an outgoing extrovert has been all year, and though our anger is virtually guaranteed to have different circumstances, the actual emotional experiences we shared are most certainly not dissimilar

maybe you're a sports fan, and your favorite team loses an important game, and you're pissed all day because of it

i don't know what it's like to be invested in something like sports to that level, but i can certainly relate to being pissed literally ALL DAY because of something that ruined it, even when it doesn't affect me directly, like when trump does something retarded

still, there are certain emotions that we have not all experienced--i, for one, though i've felt many different flavors of sadness, i have yet to experience grief, because i have never lost anyone particularly close to me

thus, it's difficult for me to comprehend what those who have are going through

whenever i try to put myself in their shoes, i essentially have to imagine what it would be like to lose someone that i care about the most--something my brain can't handle, and immediately shuts out whenever i try to do something like that

i know that if my brain is shutting it out, it must be an obnoxiously powerful feeling--but nonetheless, one that i've yet to feel in its truest extent

and, scarily enough, one that i'll be feeling very soon

See I wouldn't expect you to be able to fully empathize with grief if you haven't experienced it. I don't mean to say that everyone can inherently empathize with every emotion, just that we have the capacity to do so (unless maybe you're a sociopath), and that, as you said, we don't have to have the exact same experience in life to feel the same emotions as someone else.

Institutionalised racism and growing up around gang violence.

I can see trying to bridge that gap would be pretty difficult. I grew up poor and sometimes in very dangerous neighborhoods, so it's easy for me to relate to that aspect.

As far as the racism, I have no real experience that could compare to it.

Cognitive and somatic, iirc.

Fucked if I know the difference between empathetic and cognitive.
Somatic is like, you watch a video of a dude getting kicked in the nuts and then instinctively cover you own and feel some kind of discomfort in your own balls because of it.

Alright, I like this album. Maybe I just needed a gateway album to get me into his stuff. GKMC record is on its way, should be here by tomorrow night. I'll give it a real isolated listen and see what happens.

Okay, so -- GoodKid, M.A.A.D. City: fucking great. The beat selection on this record is incredible. Each joint is oozing with atmosphere and depth. Dr. Dre being involved obviously doesn't hurt. I think my problem the first time was that I hadn't been sold on Kendrick yet... DAMN. was the gateway drug to GKMC. I doubt I will have the same journey I had with DAMN. On that record, I found myself "discovering" tracks I had overlooked on my first couple of listens (ELEMENT., BLOOD.) Here, almost every joint hit me in some kind of way; besides Poetic Justice (which I just don't enjoy because I don't enjoy Drake), there ain't any filler.

Favourite tracks after first listen:

Sherane a.k.a. Master Splinter's Daughter
The Art of Peer Pressure
Money Trees
good kid
Compton
The Recipe
Black Boy Fly
Now or Never

My biggest complaint is the shitty condition in which the record came in; I had to listen to Swimming Pool and Compton through Spotify because the guys on Amazon sold me a lemon. Trying to see if I can get a reissue or refund to buy another copy, but I bought the CD so I can listen to this on the go.

Well the good news is Amazon completely refunded my purchase so I can buy a brand new one and still keep the old one... most of the album is listenable so I might be able to sell it for like 5 bucks or something.

Pride and Duckworth were my two favourite songs on that album and they seemed to be the ones people talked the least about.

My favorite artists/bands are probably David Bowie, Yes, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson. Probably forgetting a few and that list is not in any sort of order.

In regards to rap I think NWA is pretty alright. I also like the song Gangster's Paradise
