How do so many people get down with Kendrick Lamar?

I've been listening to his music the last couple of days, and while I can respect the artistry behind them, his shit just doesn't hit me on any level. It's about his life and experiences and unless he's lying, I just don't have anything in common with kids from Compton and I doubt many other people do. I don't understand how someone in a relatively similar position to myself could vibe with his stuff. I've only listened up to To Pimp a Butterfly.

I guess a lot of people like to think they can related, bunch of fakers. I dont mind the sound of some of them, DNA and Humble being a few of those few.

But I just cant stand to listen to him after that incident on stage at the start of the year.

nah i do, just being facetious

in terms of how i connect with him, i think i mostly just connect with suffering people in general, or at least with people who are trying to be a voice for a group of other suffering people, and i don't necessarily have to be black or be born where he was to understand or empathize with him about life on that base level, where shit just kinda sucks and there's no hope in sight, but at least we can stick together and pull through it, as long we stop killing each other

it's kinda feel-good in a way, and the consciousness of his lyrics certainly beats the FUCK out of every single other rapper in the game right now, with the notable exception of danny brown—but even he, sometimes, would do well to tone it down on the glorification of drugs and shit, because the opioid crisis has really driven my tolerance for drug-happy music to a whole new low

even so, i don't necessarily need to connect with a rapper on a personal level to fuck with their music, they just need to be super talented and rap over a nice-ass beat (most of the time, bare minimum)—i consider being able to connect with an artist on an emotional level to be a bonus, not the main thing i look for

you might like DAMN. more because it's more about internal struggle as a human being rather than as a black person, which is what TPAB is all about—but it's also more "pop-accessible" with a mixed bag of songs

GKMC is pretty good too because it's like TPAB except he takes a more "cinematic" approach—it's a concept album where every song plays kinda like a scene from a movie, and they're all part of a grander overarching narrative which is pretty engaging

emigrate or degenerate. the choice is yours
I don't really 'connect' with his music tbh. I just enjoy his artistic concepts and the musical production he employs on most of his records.

You don't necessarily have to connect with an album or find out the conceptual meaning behind it in order to enjoy said record.

No I guess not, I'd just feel goofy if other people saw me driving with Kendrick Lamar on blast knowing full well that he doesn't make music "for me."

It's because you're overestimating how important the meaning of (some of) the music is to many people. What matters a lot more is just whether they like the sound. Good vocals, nicely flowing lyrics/rhymes, catchy beats / riffs / chorus, good instrumentals that compliment each other... That's what most people care more about. Of course, it's all the better when you can further relate with an artist or connect to his music at a deeper level. But to many people that's nowhere as important as the rest. I've got plenty of songs in my playlist that are about themes I can't relate to or made by people whose experiences I haven't shared. I don't know anything about Lamar or his music but I'd go out on a limb and say that most of his fans not only can't relate to some of his musical themes but simply don't care to either. There's probably something else that's stopping you from really liking him.

I'll let Kendrick know he should start sampling Gregorian chants for his next record.

HUMBLE. too, actually, but mostly because of its excellent music video

i'm not a music video person at all, but every once a year, something comes out that blows my mind, and this is one of them

i'll focus more on feel/blood next listen, but god kinda left me wanting more. it's starts off icy but he completely changes the flow early on and leaves me behind.

i actually don't like humble at all. the main piano riff agitates me. i'll check out the music video, though.

honestly I can't think of many songs I listen to where it's about connecting with the artist on an emotional level or what have you. A lot of the time, the songs I like like My God is The Sun or Knights of Cydonia are more about the instruments and how they play off each other (especially good basslines) but I can pretty much shrug off any lyrical content as it's rarely what I focus on.

While that's all my experience with rock bands like Muse and Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters, I'd imagine that people who listen to rap also get something similar out of "the sound" of the music, if that makes sense.

you're supposed to "get it." and i don't imagine many people do, so i'm wondering where the infatuation comes from.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Im curious, do you self insert in video games?

I rarely ever do. Instrumentals and flow are the most important for me in music, so im wondering if theres some correlation here.

You can empathize with people from different walks of life without experiencing their hardships first hand.
