what's interesting is that he brought the song back for live performances during his latest tour, which was cool--it's very rare that he revisits PHM songs that aren't Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, SICNH, etc.

Closer is a good song, but I can't listen to it anymore. I've simply heard it too much. It does have what is perhaps the greatest music video of all time, though, and it greatly enhances the music. I'd check it out if you haven't.

The reason I ask is because they seem like the "standout" songs on the album. idk, they're the only ones that explicitly talk about (what seems to be) sex in that sort of detail. they're both quality songs tho. the opening to sanctified is perf.

I think the song is less about sex and more a metaphor for drug abuse, actually. "She" likely refers to heroin, which I know was Trent's drug of choice when he still used.

It's important to know where Trent himself was at when he was making this music. With Teeth is the first album he made entirely sober, and it's the point where a lot of NIN fans stop caring for his music. But they shouldn't, because he's still capable of making great music, and With Teeth is a (mostly) good album.

Anyway, yeah--with the line "heaven's just a rumor she'll dispel," Trent is acknowledging his vice, and realizes that no amount of drug use will get him to "heaven," or a place that will make him truly happy. However, "she walks me through the nicest parts of hell"--even though his addiction is hellish, it's still pretty nice, just by its nature.

"Every day I hope and pray that this will end/but when I can, I do it all again"--quite explicitly referring to addiction here.

His drug abuse didn't start getting really bad until post-Fragile era, where he almost killed himself ODing. It was at that point he knew he had to sober up--and he did.

Yeah, from what I heard it seems like a decent album. The quiet version of "Right Where It Belongs" is great. And Gone Girl's music was really good, which I think he created. I remember thinking that while watching the film and then finding out via twitter that he was involved. and i know he did the main theme of black ops 2, if you didn't know. it's actually quite good
