So have been playing around with my guitar. I used to really want to play the bass but everyone i know kept telling me that the guitar is a better choice. And well i went with it. Don't get me wrong, i absolutely love it, but i have been thinking of getting a base guitar to try out with, and was wondering if any of you knew anything about base guitars to help me figure out what to look for when buying a base guitar.

Thanks.

I prefer finger but use pick when playing rocksmith.

Okay range is up to $500. That is for now, by next year after i graduate, it could increase for a new bass. Truth is i was wondering how does one choose the bass guitar that they want to play. For me it is going to be an emotional investment as well.

From my understanding it takes a good amount of skill to play bass, well. Plus those are some really thick strings, so I hope you have the finger strength for them.

If you learn bass first, guitar will feel very easy on the hands.

God is that ever wrong. Guitar players are a dime a dozen from what I've seen. I've been playing for a few years now and I've had the same bass since (which I got from my sister). Mine is a Slammer. I would say start with something good but kind of cheap and later upgrade if you want.

Go to a large music store (you don't have to buy there) that has lots of inventory and try out a bunch of different body styles, neck profiles, and of course, electronics.  Don't "just buy a Fender P" unless they feel perfect to you.
Around that budget, Ibenez has some good models. ESP's LTD B series is really awesome too. I got a 206SM for a backup to my fancy Schecter, and it's nearly as good tone wise for half the price. Speaking of Schecter, I'd personally avoid any of their lower models, but the Studio and Custom series are pretty awesome. I've never felt a slim neck that's as easy to play as the one on my Stiletto... definably out of your budget though...
But yeah, just try a bunch of different basses and see what you like, and what suits the music you play.

I hate picks so much. I'll have to use one soon because I might be playing in a metal band (I think) where one of the songs is almost impossible to play without one.

They do have their place... and I admit that my fingers get very tired after a few fast tempo punk songs, but I don't think I've encountered that problem yet. What song?

One that the lead guitars/singer wrote. As a temporary name it's called "Spiders Breach the North Wall".

Yeah, i was thinking this is what i would have to do. Now to find the closest bass guitar store that is good.
