I love GRRM's work, but goddamn, he's such a cunt to his fanbase.

>took him more than half a decade to write a ADWD
>is taking him 4 years and counting to write TWOW
>moans about "pressurization" when fans rightfully question his lengthy process of writing
>talks shit about people who like to write fan fiction

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if he was just improvising a pretty neat idea he had in 1996 just to keep the money flowing. He already stated the series could possibly extend into another 3 books.

To be fair, he doesn't hate all fan fiction! He's rather pleased with HBOs high budget fanfic x]

On a serious note, he is a bit rude to the fans, but I understand where he's coming from. He's got a lot of work ahead of him and a huge legacy to live up to/finish strong with, so the pressure is obviously mounting with each passing year. I think he's over the hill now and once he finishes TWOW we won't have another ADWD-style wait ahead of us.

I do wish he'd be a bit more transparent regarding his actual progress, but he famously does a lot of revisions so it wouldn't be entirely honest to gauge his progress publicly, methinks.

That's ridiculous. I'm on book 4 and it's unforgivably slow. I can't handle another four gigantic books.

Which I'm sympathetic to, but that's really no excuse to treat the people who got him to where he is today like complete garbage. Either inform fans on the progress of your work, or don't say anything at all. There's no point in acting like a spoiled lazy brat when people rightfully protest about the insufferably slow pacing of a series they're paying their hard earned cash on. Nothing professional about it at all.

Funny how you didn't see JK Rowling string along her novels several years at a time when HP blew up, or throw temper tantrums at fans.

AFFC is very cerebral and heavy on the inner monologue/dialogue stuff. It's classic Act II story building really, setting up the rising action in ADWD and TWOW.

Apples and oranges. ASOIAF is much more complex than HP, and to be fair, he has released quite a bit of TWOW content and several novellas in recent years. Now, one could argue that the novellas just slowed his progress, but I'm glad we got them. The Dunk&Egg stories are lovely.

Eh idk, there's a surprising amount of canonical backstory to the world of HP, so it's not as infantile as you think. But yeah, it's certainly not as fleshed out as ASOIAF is.

Tbh, the weird pacing could all be forgiven if he had just responded to the valid criticisms with "I'm sorry, I'm working as hard as I can, it takes a lot of effort into establishing a universe of this scale" instead of "lol gtfo, i'll go as slow as i want." It's pretty disrespectful.

Valyrian Steel confirmed to kill Others.

Guess Jon better ask the Highborn families in Westeros if the Watch can borrow their Valryian swords.

Holy shit.

That was better than the Battle of the Blackwater.

Spoiler
Shit that can kill Others:
-Obsidian
-Valyrian steel
-Dragonfire (?)

I think the Others have been cultivating the wildlings as a sort of crop/army. As soon as they saw they were leaving for the wall, they decided to slaughter them all instead. Though that didn't happen in the books, so who knows.

Disagree.

You know, I actually preferred seeing the battle at Hardhome rather than Jon getting a letter from a secondary character that says "Oh, people at Hardhome are dead.  And there's some zombies in the water."  And then Jon never dwells on it, he just kinda says "Fuckit, back to grinding teeth with Stannis."

The show has definitely separated itself from the books, and has done a great job.  Sure I get mad at some things like Sansa going to Winterfell to be raped, etc. but look at it from the writer's point of view:  Are you REALLY going to write a TV show where the secondary characters do all the heavy lifting while your main characters aside from Arya just dick around?

D&D may deserve contempt, but they also deserve a lot of praise.

Nobody thinks the show is better. Paper thin characters with zero development at all, an overarching plot that never seems to go anywhere or react to the twists presented, and a reliance on a couple pivotal action scenes to carry the endless one-on-one narrative conversations that permeate each season. It's all for fun.

Yeah guys the books are still infinitely better, but this was the best action of the entire series. In fact this was one of the best battles I've ever seen in television or film. I've been apprehensive as hell about where this series is going all season but this episode put away all doubts. Seriously was just done perfectly and worked perfectly for the show. I say keep going off-book, I'm looking forward to where D&D take it.

To be fair, the show is cutting out most of the content from book 4 - on and will be ending way earlier. It kind of makes sense for them to show these huge battles because the show is nearing the end while the books are still in "the middle".
