Whereas TTGL never took itself seriously at all, Code Geass doesn't know whether or not to take itself seriously. If I hadn't already seen films like Black Swan or Enemy prior to it, I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more. Though I agree, 4/10 is probably too harsh. If nothing else, I obviously appreciated the underlying themes of "fanservice is cancer; human beings are not mere objects," etc. but at the same time, I felt like how the rape scenes were animated kind of undermined that message a little bit. It fell into the same trap (though to a much lesser extent) as shows like Kill La Kill and that Me!Me!Me! where they flash a bunch of sexualized imagery in your face to prove the point that fanservice is silly. It just seems very counterintuitive, but Perfect Blue was made in the late 80s, so clearly, it's gonna be a bit more tame on that front.

I've talked about this before, but I really think rape scenes have to be filmed or animated very carefully in order to work, and I just haven't seen it done well in an anime yet. It always feels like the animators were jerking themselves off the whole time, which logically goes against the nature of a rape scene, right? You're not supposed to enjoy it. It's not supposed to be erotic, yet it's always shot in a sexually provocative way. That's always annoying.

I also wasn't impressed with the VAing or the art design.

That said, if I rewatched it, it could easily go up to a 5/10 or even a 6/10. I agree that 4/10 is probably too low. A lot of my scores could probably be revised if I gave it a second watch--I'm just short on time these days.
