i could watch something i know i'll hate and waste a lot of my time, or i could watch something with a premise that i like and be upset when i actually end up liking the stupid thing (which i won't)

Go after the premise you like and even if it's a waste of time you'll at least have more incentive to explain how anime perverted that premise with its bullshit. It would also provide more evidence that anime is shit.

Also, if people tell you to keep watching a show for x episodes until it "gets good" I'd take that opinion with a large grain of salt. In my entire anime experience only once have I stuck around with a show I didn't really care about to have it turn out good (Cowboy Bebop). If absolutely nothing strikes you about any aspect of the show in the first episode it's probably a dud.

Also, you are (not) going to enjoy the first episode of NGE. That I can forsee.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - I actually finished this series. Like a trainwreck, it was just difficult to look away. I don't think I need to go into my thoughts on this show, because my thoughts on it have been on record for ages. Simply put, it is the perfect amalgam of everything I detest about not only anime--not only Japan--but the human race and life itself. It truly has it all. The good news is, I will likely never see a more vomit-inducing show for the rest of my life, and that's honestly quite comforting to know. 1/10

I guess being a big fan of Dragon Ball since I was like 3 plays a big part in me loving it. I don't know if I'd be the same person today if I didn't watch it as a kid.

Most people will assume you mean the anime anyway. People usually specify movies in a separate category from their shows, even if integral to the story (like the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, for instance). The rebuild movies also come to mind; people refer to them as the rebuild movies. Evangelion typically refers to the 26 episode show and the End of Evangelion, which is the only anime movie I can think of right now which is essentially considered part of the show.

The movie is basically the series condensed with more stuff at the final battle

Dragon Ball - I had to stop at episode 28. Hated all the characters except for Goku himself, and Yamcha to an extent. Its relentlessly perverted sense of humor started to grate on my brain after awhile. If it could go a single episode without making a dumb sex joke involving Bulma's breasts, maybe the show would've been more tolerable--especially when it's clear that it's meant for babies. I'm surprised I made it as far as I did, to be honest. 5/10

That actually does stop later in the series, can't remember if it's the King Piccolo arc or when the series transitions to Dragon Ball Z though

It's super weird seeing you laud Breath of the Wild while simultaneously saying Ghibli movies are "too safe". BotW is one of the most heavily anime-influenced games in the series, with the characterization and storytelling elements feeling ripped directly from a typical shonen, right down to the character archetypes. As for Ghibli films being safe, Miyazaki himself admits that all of his films are made for kids, with the exception of The Wind Rises (one of my favorite films) -- though creatively, they've all pushed boundaries. Grave of the Fireflies really is fantastic, though.

I see what you mean, and that's an interesting point, but just be reminded that video games and movies are fundamentally different mediums. It's the reason why video game movies always bomb and movie-licensed games tend to suck.

A few years ago, a Zelda anime was announced, and I had no intention of ever watching it. I still haven't watched it, even though Zelda is probably my favorite franchise of all time. This is simply because it takes away from what Zelda is at its core: an interactive video game, or a personal adventure. Zelda without interactivity is like a car without wheels.

I can tolerate a little bit of anime influence in a video game here and there, especially if it complements the gameplay. In fact, I might argue that some of the aspects I dislike the most about your typical shonen anime are better suited for the medium of video games. Stuff like archetypal characters are not necessarily a bad thing in any medium, but the concept of a "character archetype" is something I'd relegate to video games almost exclusively, principally because certain games are all about choosing a character or playstyle that resonates with you or your personality. After all, the reason archetypes exist is because certain personality types resonate with us more than others.

So, as for why I can enjoy Zelda but not Miyzaki movies? There's quite a few reasons, but the main reason is because Zelda engages me as a player and active participant in the game's story, and that's inherently exciting to me. It's harder to get that feeling from a movie, much less an anime, because you have to utilize a few subtle techniques to give the illusion of interactivity--techniques that I don't really feel are present in Miyazaki's works.

It's not impossible, though. My go-to feel-good adventure flick is the Goonies. I can watch that movie 10 times in a row and never get tired of it, because every time I do, I'm a kid again, and I feel like I'm right there with them. Somehow, not sure how, but it nailed it. It may have to do with it not being a cartoon, despite curiously having the atmosphere of one.

Without even subtly implying any sort of racism, is it possible that the cultural differences between protagonists is what drives you away from anime? What I mean is that Japan has such a wildly different set of cultural norms and stories that you experience an almost uncanny valley-like response to the way anime characters interact, whereas in video games you're much more free to interact (or interpret scripted responses) how you see fit. I think this is what drives my dislike for a lot of anime, and I wonder if it does the same for you. Maybe it's the absurdity of anime -- from a western perspective -- that turns you off to it, which isn't really present in video games because you decide what your character does and feels.

Also, I fucking love The Goonies.

Yeah, actually, I think that's precisely it. "Uncanny valley-like" is a good way to put it.

Weebs obviously don't see it the same way, though, which is the confusing part. It's easy to just say "different strokes" but that doesn't really cut to the core of why and how they're able to enjoy it with the fervor that they do.

I'm inclined to think that 70-80% of it might just be sexual perversion, but maybe that's just negative bias talking again.

I might be able to "see it the same way" if this projected idea were more substantiated with specific scenes which evoked that sentiment. I could hazard a guess as to the sometimes strange or seemingly inconsequential things characters say to each other (which could be appropriated to cultural difference or to faulty translation). Your subsequent comment about sexuality makes me think you weren't thinking of dialogue, however.

Sexualized content wouldn't explain my "fervent" enjoyment of my favorite anime, given that they're essentially sexless (Ghibli Films and Mushishi).

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
anime is nothing but trash

Bruh, if it's got more than 50 episodes you can safely assume it's garbage. Hunter x Hunter is the only one that comes to mind that is worth the watch.

Shorter run shows tend to be more impactful and have better stories.
