He also told Peter Jackson what a man sounds like being stabbed in the back, which helped add realism to the Grima Wormtongue/Saruman backstab scene in the Two Towers. He definitely has combat experience at least.

I think I remember reading that somewhere.He wanted to play Gandalf because it was his life long dream, but he was such a great sport he elected to play Saruman instead because he thought McKellen was a better Gandalf. That's how much of a legend he is.
