there's so many storylines and stuff--it just seems like an absolute nightmare to follow

i take it the movies aren't really good resources, but they'd be the easiest for me

if i were to start getting into comics, like... where would i start

Both Marvel and DC's universes just got "rebooted", so now is a great time to start reading the comics.

If you're more into watching stuff, check out anything from the DC Animated Universe. It's all really good stuff there. But if I had to narrow it down...
-Justice League (the most important and necessary for getting a grasp of the DC Universe, IMO)
--Justice League Unlimited (follows 'Justice League' directly, opening up the story to lesser-known characters. My favourite being Vigilante.)

-Batman: The Animated Series (precedes everything in the DCAU IIRC, followed directly by Batman Beyond)
--Batman Beyond (surprisingly still good, even for today. Follows BTAS, so watch that first.)

For movies, it's a little harder to narrow down at DC, because they're all pretty fucking good. But I'll try.
-All-Star Superman (arguably the best interpretation of Superman ever, though I recommend the comic over the movie. Movie will still suffice, though.)

-Batman: Under the Red Hood (quality adaptation with awesome voice acting. Highly recommended.)

-Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (I think you'll really enjoy this one. It's a little bit more... philosophical than the others.)

-Justice League: Doom (Batfags dick ride this story to death, but still a very good movie.)

-Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox. (arguably the best DCA movie I've ever seen. Highly recommended.)

-Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (good movie, one of the weaker movies, though. Still recommended.)

-The Dark Knight Returns: Full movie (I fucking HATE this story, but a lot of Batfags enjoy it. It's still worth a watch/read if you want to immerse yourself, though.)

Any of those are great.

For Marvel, I recommend the 90's Spider-man show, and Spectacular Spider-man. Nothing else is really all that great from Marvel, animation-wise. Wolverine and the X-Men is also quite good, but my experience with that show is lacking.

For live-action, I reckon you've seen quite a few movies in your time. I'll do a best-to-worst list.

Literally anything from the MCU (from Iron Man 1 to Ant-Man, regardless of some of the shittier movies on the way.)
Spider-man 1/2 (and 3 if you hate yourself)
X-Men
X2
X3 The last Stand (regarded as one of the worst Superhero movies ever, but necessary to understand the next movie...)
X-Men Days of Future Past
Fantastic Four
Superman 1/2 (3 and 4 are god-awful. 1/2 and very dated but still necessary to watch, IMO)
Tim Burton's Batman/Batman Returns ('Batman Forever' and 'Batman and Robin' are good for a laugh. Like Superman, these movies are dated as fuck but still necessary.)
The Amazing Spider-man/2
The Wolverine (decent)
Man of Steel (I really liked it, but most people don't. You probs won't enjoy it if you're not a die-hard fan of Superman like me, or aren't a fan of Snyder's directing style. Still necessary to watch if you want to understand Batman V. Superman)

That seems to be it, for now.

i would have said ultron, too, but one of the key factors of being a supervillain, in my opinion, is their capacity to induce fear in the audience--they have to be threatening

i wasn't threatened at all by ultron
maybe it was because his CG didn't look real enough, or because i sympathized too much with his goal--idk

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
i never liked magneto simply for two reasons

1. his name isn't pronounced mag-NET-oh (it's mag-NEET-oh... what the fuck is that shit)
2. he has the goofiest design ever, with the worst colors ever

i never read comics so i always tend to have a superficial system of ratings for these type of things

This is a magneto, often just called a mag. It's an early ignition timing system  that basically uses a resister and a spinning chunk of metal to time an electrical current. It's pronounced mag-NEET-o. You will find two of them on nearly any airplane with a reciprocating engine.

i always liked the idea of the Four Horsemen and the book of Revelations in general, quite an interesting read even for the most militant atheists i'd say.

honestly just shuffle around the various DC and Marvel properties until you find a storyline that seems interesting and just go from there.

for tv/movies, DC's animated stuff is the go-to.
Batman: The Animated Series
Superman: The Animated Series
Justice League
Justice League: Unlimited
Static Shock
Batman Beyond

^ all share the same universe

Teen Titans & Young Justice are both really good as well

for movies theres a lot of good options
Wonder Woman 2009
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths
Batman: Under the Red Hood
Batman: Assault on Arkham
Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox
Justice League: Gods and Monsters (also has three 5 minute companion shorts + some companion comics)

for marvel properties, try these for shows
X Men: Evolution
Spider Man (1967- this is more of a "so bad its good" kind of thing, a really fun romp that doesnt take itself seriously)
Spider Man (1994)

marvel movies:
Spider Man 2
X Men
X Men 2
X Men: First Class
X Men: Days of Future Past (retcons the events of X Men 3 so you might want to watch or read about X3 to really understand whats going on)
Blade
Iron Man 1
Captain America 2
Guardians of the Galaxy

Wolverine and the X-Men is right up there with Spectacular Spider-Man for top-tier comicbook animation.
