Quote from: Verbatim on September 05, 2015, 11:47:00 PMalso, someone explain to me the differences between death metal, black metal, and doom metalprotip:you can'tBasically, Death Metal is commonly down-tuned, uses low-end heavy gutterals, focuses on riffs and grooves, commonly has lyrics about death and gore, stuff like that. Two example bands would be Morbid Angel (Altars of Madness) and Incantation (any album but, like, Mortal throne of Nazarene or something). Black Metal does not focus on riffs or grooves, but instead cares more about creating an atmosphere, and focuses on chromatic riffs played repeatedly. Tremolo picking is common but not a requirement, but most bands have used tremolo picking at least a few times. The gutterals tend to rest in the high end, but some bands that take influence from DM use lower-end gutterals (ex. Hate Forest). Black Metal does not usually make use of technical playing or any kind of fancy groove, preferring to stick to something kind of meditative and trance-like, constant steady drums and riffs with the vocals reciting lyrics commonly about Satan, the occult, hatred, and anything pessimistic and misanthropic.Doom Metal is nothing like the two other genres, and is much easier to distinguish at first listen. Always Black Sabbath inspired, but often taken away from the realm of weed smoking hippy shit into realms of the occult and high fantasy. Slow riffs are extremely common but not a necessity all the time. Clean vocals are far more common than gutterals. Doom Metal often actually gets into themes of Christianity, without necessarily promoting "Christian bands" (ex. Candlemass - Samarithan). Grooves are encouraged, downtuning is almost necessity, killer vocal skills are welcome.Bolzer blurs the lines, like many bands do, between genres. They love their grooves (Entranced by the Wolfshook), but at the same time they create an atmosphere with tremolo picked, often chromatic riffs, with low-end gutterals, and a drummer that isn't into super fast repetitive blast beats. Other genre line straddling bands include Portal, Blasphemy (though they basically made their own offshoot of Black Metal), Ruins of Beverast, etc.Eventually, you get smaller sub genres like Funeral Doom, Death Doom, etc. these are, however, not in large numbers.
