I was wondering because of Return of The Jedi. When the fleet they had at Ender got defeated there was this galaxy wide celebration. One of the planets that was celebrating was Coruscant which would be the Empires home world or at least a major one. So because of this galactic wide celebration which also took place on a planetary scale on coruscant. That fleet at Ender must have been the only fleet they had and Vader and Palpatine must have been the only ones running the Empire. So then how exactly did the Empire managed to conquer must of the galaxy with a very small fleet and managed to be ran by two people for some years after A New Hope?

As big of a Star Wars fan as I am, I don't know. Seems like something there should be a movie about; seeing planets fall one by one. I'm assuming that no planet had anywhere near the military strength that the Emperor and his clone army had, and they were either easily defeated, or surrendered. Also I thought I read somewhere about the threat of orbital bombardments from Star Destroyers.

Since the latest released edition of the films is what's canon, and Disney will release the original theatrical cuts on blu-ray (without the galaxy wide celebration scene) I guess that problem will be gone before Episode VII hits (explaining how the there's still Storm Troopers around)

What's facepalm-worthy about that? The added scenes doesn't make sense, that's why they can't be explained. The special editions make it seem like the empire fell in a day.

"The Regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station."

Sounds like they did it like the Romans, just set up independent planetary dictatorships and told them to pay tribute from time to time or get face exterminatus.

Still doesn't explain why there would be all that cheering, you've still got thousands of dictators to overthrow first.

They were celebrating because the Emperor and Darth Vader had died. That doesn't mean they were part of the only fleet in the Empire's existence. Plus it was also the destruction of the new Death Star. The Empire's military command was shattered that day, giving people a chance to fight back and win

What?

They're having large celebrations on planets that would still be under have imperial control. In reality there's no way in hell they would be able to do that. There would still be an Empire that has a heavy presence in those areas. This isn't Nazi Germany where when Hitler killed himself the Germans were pretty much done with. The Empire on the other hand would still have a heavy presence. Those celebration scenes don't make any sense at all.

By going with those scenes where they're having large ass celebrations in cities on planets that would be under heavy imperial control it must have been. If that wasn't they're only fleet then there's no way in hell those planets would be able to do that in those cities. Like I said those scenes are implying the only imperial presence in the galaxy was at that battle.

It wouldn't be all that shattered. The Empire isn't Nazi Germany where there is the German military and the SS which are two separate things. The Empire's military is one thing. So when the Emperor died there would be someone to take over. For the fighting back thing lets be real. There would still be a heavy imperial presence on Coruscant. The planet wouldn't fall that fast withing hours. If there truly was a resistance fighting then this fight would take months. It wouldn't be some fight that would take hours. So this scene is implying there wasn't any heavy imperial presence on the planet since the celebration was withing hours.

You're looking too much into a plot that otherwise wouldn't have anything to offer but some sci-fi action.

Special editions are canon. If Disney releases the originals on Blu Ray before Ep. VII (which they can't. They don't get the rights to the OT until 2020), then the special editions are still canon. When GL released the special editions with the originals, the originals weren't considered canon.

As well, fell in a day? People just celebrated. The Empire most likely took control of the situation shortly after and put the people in their place. Besides, we saw Nabbo, Coruscant, and Tatooine.

Tatooine is a remote world on the outer rim mostly controlled by the Hutts. The Empire has very little control there. Who cares if they celebrate? Nabbo was a planet controlled by the Rebellion at that point. Of course they celebrate. Coruscant is filled with billions of people, who were probably put in their place once riot squads showed up.

Millions, if not billions of storm troopers, near-instant travel between stars and total eradication of every major opposition within weeks (CIS, Jedi)

With an incredibly loyal army, and the ability to travel to a colony instantly if it gets unruly, they likely faced many rebellions but all were put down aside from the Alliance.

However, the Empire still continued to function for centuries in some shape or form, with the whole clones of Sidious and the fact that they weren't stupid to put all of their admiralty on one station. I don't recall Vader or Sidious ever leading a fleet engagement.

I want to say it was just George "Not Enough CGI" Lucas fucking up and adding in scenes just for the sake of adding scenes...and Jar Jar.

But, I would guess they were celebrating a major blow to the Empire.  While Sheeeeev was popular initially, people were growing tired of the Empire's brutality and were just celebrating a major defeat.  However, they were most likely brought under heel soon enough until the Rebels could liberate them from the Imperial Remnants.

I honestly can't wait for Disney to re-release the OT.  That way I can erase Vader lazily moaning "No.  Nooooooo" when saving Luke from Sheeeev from my memory...and from canon.
