Really enjoyed it but they went off the fucking deep end with the last two episodes and movie

Thoughts?

idk if i'd call them dream sequences per se, but i did find myself enjoying them, even if they do only serve to explain the point of the entire show to people who didn't get it (and in a way that a lot of people found all the more confusing and unsatisfying), but i was able to appreciate them nonetheless

knowing there was still a movie left to watch certainly helped, whereas that wasn't a certainty when the show was still new, so i can definitely understand why they're unpopular

there's a lot of really cool and fun animation in those episodes, and the introspective and philosophical writing is highly reminiscent of a lot of my favorite written works, like The Stranger, where similar concepts are explored

they toyed around with a lot of ideas that i've spent a lot of time thinking about, especially when i was shinji's age, and i've never really found myself relating with a fictional character at that level before, so that was really cool

the whole "this is the me that exists in your mind" segment in particular has always stood out to me as a really strong
illustration of how difficult it can be to deal with the anxieties of being perceived negatively by people in spite of all your efforts to avoid that, and since the same rule applies to everybody, we as a species are basically all just these autistic automatons trying to get a read on each other without making ourselves too vulnerable in the process, which is a paradox that i think the entire show is an allegory for

when i watched this show for the first time, i still had a rockhard hate-boner for anime as a medium, and i wasn't trying to be open-minded about it whatsoever, so without these two episodes (and the movie), i probably wouldn't have ever cared to examine the show's deeper themes, so i think that's where a lot of my appreciation comes from as well

you could say that the episodes kinda give off the impression that they ran out of budget or whatever, but i can't say that really bothers me, since i was never in it for the robot fights anyway

What’s your take on the ending?
Hopeful or nah?

it's definitely hopeful, almost to a fault really

if you have the opportunity to (basically) save everyone from their own lives, and are tempted to do so because of how shitty people are to each other, i think to ultimately reject it because of some notions of it "all being worth it in the end" would certainly require a semblance of hope in your heart

though i relate with shinji a lot, i'd have to say that shinji's choice to abandon instrumentality and start life anew is where we kind of diverge, since i don't really share that hope and i'd be perfectly content living as a puddle of tang for the rest of time if it meant nobody ever had to feel pain again

i can certainly understand the decision from a storytelling standpoint, though, and i can appreciate that shinji wound up giving everybody the choice to return if they were so inclined to come back

i wasn't actually expecting them to just end the world and leave it there--i'm not even sure if that's what i'd want

Agreed
People go on about how depressing End of Evangelion was but everyone lives, Shinji finds his will to live, and Gendo finally fucking dies

I think it all comes down to whether best girl gets over her past or not
If not, I think Shinji's journey would all be for not

Anno certainly didn't help clear things up by giving her such an ambiguous expression and final word

What don't you like about her

Asuka started off as the stereotypical loudmouth tsundere but her story is probably even more tragic than Shinji
Quickly became my favorite character once you find out about her parents and why she acts the way she does

Plus I really liked seeing Shinji and Asuka flirting and getting mad at each other
It was a welcome break from all Shinji's mopey dramatic shit

bear in mind that i mean "least likable character," i don't think asuka is badly written or anything

i just don't like tsunderes who are ALL tsun; i think the only nice thing she ever says is compliment shinji on his cello playing

a few more of those moments would've gone a long way for me, because i just found her insufferable for the entire show

which is tragic because you can tell they would've been better friends if not for their shitty circumstances; it's the epitome of a relationship starting off on the wrong foot and literally never correcting itself because they're just too fucking awkward

i remember watching the dance like you want to win episode for the first time, where shinji and asuka have to get over themselves and start getting along with each other so they can be in-sync, and i was expecting that development to last, but then it doesn't really, which always bugged me

yeah yeah her backstory is tragic and whatever but that doesn't make her likable imo; i can definitely appreciate the role she has in the story, but i could never call her a favorite character just based off of her personality alone

she was also sexualized a bit too much for my liking; i always dread those stupid panty/nude gags on rewatches

out of curiosity, did you watch the netflix subs? and if not, did you make sure to watch the director's cuts of the last few episodes

I actually like tsun shit
But you can tell Asuka and Shinji would get along really well but they can't because of the walls they've put up, I think it makes their characters (and the ending) more poignant
So I really enjoyed that angle

Also yeah
I was shocked by the number of panties and bras I saw during the course of the show
At least it didn't affect plot

Don't hate I watched the Netflix dub
Subtitles distract me from what happens on screen

Having not heard the original english dub I thought the voice actors did a great job for the redub

oh, that's fair enough i think

i watch subs almost exclusively because i just always prefer to hear the original audio of stuff, but i've never been an elitist about that, and i've never understood people who choose to be, since like you said, some people just find the text distracting

the only thing you really miss out on in this case is megumi ogata's phenomenal performance imo, besides the dialogue not always being one-to-one

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

I don't have a problem with Asuka as much as I did when I first watched the show; she really did grow on me and I find a lot of myself in her. The problem is that she never developed beyond simply knowing her own problems.

Shinji had a problem, he went through Instrumentality, he got over it.
Rei had a problem, she went through Instrumentality, she got over it.
Misato had a problem, she went through Instrumentality, she got over it.

Asuka had a problem, she went through Instrumentality, and she continued to blame everyone else and refused to admit she might have been in the wrong at some point. "I know about your little jerk off fantasies. If I can't have you all to my myself then I want nothing to do with you!' Oh get of your high horse, you kept jumping back and forth between him and Kaji and Shinji is 100% correct in calling you out when you wouldn't let him in.

She's a lot more subtle than the others but it was definitely there. She went from praising the ground Gendo walked on to full on hating him by the end of the series. She had to deal with her nature as both a clone to a real person and being an Angel at the same time. Throughout the series she thought she was just some sacrificial pawn to Gendo's ends until she chose not to be.

There was no development
At least none that I could understand

And I don't think some 2deep4u dream sequences count as development because it never changes her behavior
I am me
You are you
Peepee poopoo
Blah blah

Also why Asuka is better
Her dream sequence actually made sense and you actually see her change as her psyche breaks down

Rei just have questions build up around her and they never get answered
She just decides to abandon Gendo and go to Shinji because the plot told her to

Also that's my problem with the series as a whole
The series builds up questions and leads to a big climax and then they just blue ball you at the end with convoluted philosophy
And depressed weebs eat it up because they like to act deep

Eva has some great character, theme, and plot but their story telling is absolutely atrocious

rei not really being much of a real character works out for me, because i like to think of her (and asuka, for that matter) as a representation of a popular archetype taken to their logical extreme

"what would happen if these typical anime girl personalities were taken as seriously as possible"

as it turns out, they'd probably be pretty fucked in the head, and the show demonstrates that very well

when people talk about how the show is a deconstruction, or how anno hates otakus and shit, i think this is what they're talking about, even if they're not fully correct about either of those two things
