Friendship ended with UK. Japan is our new best friend now.

No tarrifs or trade restrictions between the EU and Japan anymore. Free import of all Japanese stuff and big boosts for trade in Europe, and vice versa. Export of European values, labor standards and human rights measures to Asia.

Fuck I love the EU. I feel bad for the UK now.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

Hey.
I came here from b.net after a few Floods invited me. None of them post on either b.net nor here anymore, which is sad. I was still active on b.net until for some bizarre reason, b.net admins locked out people who have not played Destiny. Even if you wanted to post on the offtopic section. After that, I fully moved here and have not returned to b.net since.
Please come play Halo with me.

I'd rather have tariffs if it means controlling your laws and borders.

This is the first time since the start of the ordeal where I've wholeheartedly supported brexit

Garlemald did nothing wrong.
Is there anything preventing the UK from doing the same thing with Japan?

They can make deals with anyone after Brexit.

If I'm not here, I'm doing Photography. Or I'm asleep. Or hungover. One of those three, anyway.

Yeah, but who would now that we will be out of the largest FTA. What does the UK have that the EU can't already provide, and Japan desperately needs?

Africa is the only one that has shown interest in trade post-Brexit and most of the continent is still developing or have got their resources already under exploitation by themselves or by 3rd parties like Chinese/Russian/European companies (SA, Nigeria, Cameroon, Angola, Zimbabwe, etc), while the UK deals in services, a sector that likely very few will need when it's not connected to a larger economic zone.

In legal theory? No. If the UK leaves the EU, it's free to enter into trade agreements with any other country. In practice? Yes, a whole lot. Free trade agreements are delicate things. There's a million things to consider. Import/export controls, consumer protection, health standards, labor law, environmental impact, protecting local business, harmonizing trade policy, practical considerations for customs checks and ports, intellectual property protection and mutual recognition of business rights, tax schemes and so on. This agreement between the EU and Japan has been years in the making because of how complicated it all is. Especially considering how inept of a negotiator the UK has shown itself to be during the Brexit talks, it's doubtful at best it will manage to conclude anything similar within at least a few years.

And that's just the start of it all. Both the UK and Japan's economies are heavily service-based rather than product-based. Free trade agreements work best when each party has something the other really needs, such as when one country produces a lot of goods while the other offers primarily (digital) services. This is not the case here as both countries are relatively similar. Free trade agreements also contain a lot of give and take where the weaker party tends to give concessions in exchange for access to the larger economy. Not only is Japan's economy twice the size of the UK's, but there's also very little the UK could offer Japan (or most other countries) that it won't already get from the EU. This is actually a major concern for the UK's trading future in general. It's expected that the UK will definitely be able to close these trade agreements but it will have to pay the price one way or another. The EU is about the largest economy in the entire world, rivaled only by the US and China. That gives it a lot of bargaining power that the UK simply doesn't have. A worry that many experts have is that the UK will essentially sell itself out to get trade deals with other countries after Brexit by, for example, becoming a tax haven for companies to avoid taxation or conceding on its own consumer protection and product quality standards. While there's already talk the UK could join the TPP (despite being nowhere near the Pacific), it's definitely not the same and will probably result in the UK taking a major hit. Japan has already warned the country repeatedly to avoid a no-deal Brexit as to not misalign itself with European standards.

So can it in theory? Yes. Will it be able to do so? Maybe, but it's going to be difficult. Is it going to get as good of a deal as the EU does? No, it's pretty much guaranteed not to.

why are you peeking under here
Nice I might order some ramen/snack boxes down the line then. I did last year but the tariffs were really high so I wasn't too keen on doing it again, but if there's no tariffs now then that basically cuts the prize in half for me.

Doesn't matter what your ideologies are, or how bad being international is; it's the future for mankind. The more "unity" there is, the less of an "identity" people have, the more we've progressed as a species.
