Keep in mind that my very first post in this discussion was saying that Ecstasy turns into a retard. I don't think I've ever managed to say anything positive about the drug this entire conversation, and yet you insist that I would even consider doing it. Fuck that noise, Verb; that's what is pissing me off right now. I haven't even done anything and you're berating me.
I'm not berating you, I'm--

Well, yeah, I guess I am. I'm sorry, I'll stop after this.

I don't know if you're just at a high tension right now between the events of last night and early this morning, but you need to calm the fuck down and realize that not everybody is snorting cocaine behind your back.
Maybe. I have trust issues, Aria. I have many people in my life who've turned to drugs after they told me to my face that they never would, and now they're fucking their lives up.

That's why I get so touchy about this. And yeah, maybe I am a bit riled up from last night.

And don't even try to backtrack by saying "you smoked pot though", that wasn't my point of contention.
It was mine, though. It wasn't that you smoked anything--it's that you told me a couple years ago in the IRC that you'd "never" (and you used the word "never") smoke anything. That's what upset me.

Call me irrational, but when people use words like "never", and has a good track record of being honest, I can't help but take that literally.

And no, I'm not gonna keep yelling at you--I'm just explaining myself at this point. I'm sorry for implying you were some kind of pill-popping junkie; that was an over-exaggeration.

Quote
That's because I'm wrong whenever I do so, and I'd hate to be wrong about saying, "I'll never smoke meth."
I'm glad I don't have that problem. It's not that I can see the future--it's that I'm determined.

Don't you think that might be a reason why I avoid using the word "never"? Maybe I just have the mind of a 15th century sailor, but saying "never" sounds like tempting fate to me.

And as has been the shown in every case since the dawn of time, very few people have your sense of determination. Everyone else has to make compromises and use tricks to reinforce theirs.

Your love gets me so high
I don't believe life can be lived to a decent degree of thrill, excitement, and happiness without dabbling in some questionable or risky activities here and there. Of course, that isn't to say I condone usage of hard drugs like coke, heroine, or any of that shit, but smoking weed, drinking, or taking a shroom every now and then isn't going to do anything particularly harmful (There seems to be a surprisingly large number of people in this thread misinformed about the neurological consequences of psilocybin- There really aren't any). I don't consider any one of these activities particularly stupid in their own right, it's generally a matter of the company and environment that they're combined with.

Risk something no activity is truly free of. There are always chances of horrendous consequences in any sort of action you decide to take. The important aspect of living freely and with a bit of room for "Experiencing" what the world has to offer is accounting for the variables that could lead to a bad outcome, and making a judgement. Regarding weed... I can't think of many things that could go wrong in my case. I smoke maybe once every two or three weeks, and it's always in the company of other people, generally in a secluded dorm room with no greater chance of injury than if we weren't high to begin with.

Partaking in these sorts of things is always paired with the chance of a nasty consequence, but that chance is very minimal. The situational capacity for a wrong turn is the same if I go on a roller coaster, go skydiving, or even take a trip down the road to buy a salad. But through self-limitation, responsible company, and infrequency, there's really nothing to be afraid of. I understand Verb's very cut-and-dry argument of "It's stupid, you shouldn't do it," but thinking that philosophy through, it's applicable to practically anything. I don't want to live my life in a box made of industrial steel.
great post, man. it hammers down my points well.

while it may be true for some people that only doing one of the drugs you listed once is okay, there are plenty of others who have fucked themselves by just doing them once. wanna know why?
You don't need to tell me--I know very well. I'm simply making fun of dumb stoner logic that I hear constantly.

I'm not calling it stupid because I don't "agree" with it, though. Recreational drug use has qualities that can be objectively described as unintelligent behavior. In fact, many things can be described as unintelligent behavior. There's nothing childish about it.

I'm bringing this post to the forefront.

Drugs - yes, even "hard" ones - are pretty much all fine in moderation. Personally I believe that you should be able to put into yourself whatever you wish so long as you're only endangering yourself and others, though I personally wouldn't be shooting up krokodil every sunday evening or snorting five lines of cocaine before my breakfast.
You're contradicting yourself. Under your logic, there's no logical reason for you not to snort cocaine, in "moderation". That's an irrational aversion, according to your logic.

I really loathe the moderation argument because you're forgetting an important part of it--it's not just "everything in moderation"--it's everything in moderation, including moderation. That means there really are some things that you should never try. And I would argue that drugs are one of those things.

Constant sobriety should be among your top priorities in life.

You have to explain why occasional drug use is okay, or... I'll never understand why it's okay. You can act like I'm never gonna listen, because you can't just let the old me die, but I'm listening.

So, tell me, why is it that being straight-edge is so much worse than doing your precious drugs?
Why is sobriety not good enough for you?
if anybody actually believes that they're somehow superior to someone else because they have experience with drugs, then they're missing the point entirely. like winy said, altering your consciousness via drugs is an experience that, while there are risks associated with it, brings tangible, positive outcomes that sometimes could not be possible through a sober approach. one example of this is alleviating depression and increasing one's overall well-being through a psyilocybin trip. there is empirical evidence of people being treated this way, and there is countless anecdotal evidence from people who can report positive changes in the way they view life after a trip (me being one of them, i could easily go into more detail if requested).

in my opinion, i think people who live a life of sobriety are simply missing out on some of the wonders that life has to offer, but i don't think any less of them as a person.

Quote
I'm not trying to take away your right to do what you like to do. I'm just trying to explain to you why what you're doing is stupid, and I'm asking you why it isn't stupid. Just because you aren't dead or hospitalized the next morning after a night of doing drugs doesn't make taking that risk okay.
however, i believe that if you can safely consume a drug and have your life return to normal once the drug's effects have faded, it is worth the risk. just like how it is worth the risk to go skydiving, ride a rollercoaster, or any similar thrill-seeking activity. there are risks with every decision you make, and if someone can rationally lay out the positives and negatives, and find more weight in the positives, then they have made an informed decision and are being responsible. that's where moderation comes into play.

Just because something can be dangerous doesn't inherently make it unintelligent. That's still your opinion, nothing objective about it.

Judging people is a sign of low intelligence and self-esteem, actually. You don't need to look at others' flaws if you're perfectly content with yourself.
