I've met two users on here. IRL. They were pretty cool people. It was a bit awkward at first, but we had a blast once we got going.EDIT: That sounded a lot more sexual than I had intended.
People you meet on the internet are still people. I'd say that makes them eligible to be real friends.

Yes. People will say that you aren't the same person online as you are offline. Even I've said that in the past, but honestly, I think it's bullshit. I think your Internet self is you showing your "true" personality, and your offline self is you obfuscating your personality. The Internet is where your true self appears.
I'd say it's actually just your more quiet thoughts. Things you keep to yourself. Not necessarily any less true or false. But an extension of the quiet parts of your head.The majority of things I say on here are things you could bring up with a conversation with me in person. But otherwise, in person, I'm quiet. People tend to hide, or keep quiet, their true thoughts in person, as you said.Part of it is that I've known some of my Internet friends for years. Some of my oldest ones, I've known for 8+ years. We've never met, but I think it would be an insult not to consider them friends. They are. The only thing that separates us, metaphorically, is the screen--that's how close we are. The screen is auxiliary. It's an arbitrary distinction.
