Do Americans unironically clap in movie theaters?

I have heard recently that Americans clap when a movie ends, is this true? The only other people that I am aware do this strange applause is Indians (not Native Americans but Indian Indians.)

If this rumour is true, can you please tell me why you would do such a strange and bizzare thing? The images on the screen cannot hear your applause? They are not actors on a stage, so who are you showing your appreciation towards?

I think it has to do with the people showing solidarity and agreement with the other moviegoers, and that you enjoyed the movie.

Yeah, movies like that (mostly comic-based films with a huge fanbase) sometimes get an audience clap-fest during a midnight release or something.

it's really not a big deal, guy

the only showing i've been to where everyone clapped was during Harry Potter

really, it's about the audience having fun watching the film all together

why don't you ask why people clap or hit stuff when they laugh
it would be about as useful and as interesting of a question
