I love you, son.
I saw a triple billing of the sequel trilogy last night with the midnight premiere of TROS.

Uhm.

I have no idea what the fuck I watched but I was both horrified by and loving every second of it.

I'm not sure how I could describe it in terms of quality. TLJ is still definitely the best of the trilogy (and the saga), but I think I would rather watch  9 than 7, although I think 7 is the better movie... maybe? I'm still trying to process everything.

4 = 5 = 8 > 7 > Solo > 6 > 3 > 2 > 1 > RO
I'd put 9 either above or below 7

It seems like every previous Star Wars movie has had a really positive initial reaction that goes down in the weeks that follow.

So with that said, my expectations are ground-level.

All the leaks from over a month ago turned out to be true. I did not care for this movie and judging by the current reviews, I’m not alone in this sentiment.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
Spoiler
The movie can effectively be separated into two parts: rapid-speed cuts while tracking the McGuffin, then slow, dragging scenes centered around Palpatine/"The Power of Destiny". The movie is better in the first half for one reason only: you don't have enough time to think about how stupid the story is, and the latter half you do.

Also, not calling back to Rey's earlier "What's your name" scene by having Rey embracing her mononym would have been better. The most coherent aspect of the film was identity and familial influence, specifically that family doesn't define who you are. The answer to Palpatine's aspiration isn't choosing to take the identity of another family, it would be to embrace total individuality and reject a family name.

Also Also, they shouldn't have resurrected Finn's "I love Rey" plot if they weren't going to conclude it. His arc in TLJ could have reasonably settled that, and they fucked him up more by effectively making that the only thread he has to follow throughout the movie.

i'm actually very excited, if only because i've never had a star wars opinion that wasn't completely against the grain before (except for rogue one, i think we can all agree that rogue one sucked)

so i can only imagine what i'll be getting out of this one now that both critics and fans seem to be disappointed

emigrate or degenerate. the choice is yours
Not to be 'that guy' but the more time goes on the more this franchise starts to get horrifically overrated for me.

I'm not just including the sequel and prequel trilogy in that category. Even rewatching the originals I can't help but feel that there's nothing much going on. Not just thematically, but in terms of entertainment value as well. Sometimes I can get through about 30 minutes of ANH and even Empire before my attention starts waning. I actually think Return is probably the best in the whole saga notwithstanding the dreadful Ewok scenes. Lukes confrontation with Vader and Palpatine alone totally compensates for what's kind of a generic space opera franchise.

Credit where credits due though, it was a cool concept that invigorated a genre of odyssey sci fi in the late 70s but it really hasn't aged all that well IMO.

Haven't seen ROS yet but I've read the plot spoilers it and it sounds really half baked.

So here's my ranking until I see it I suppose:

Return > Empire > Revenge (not because its a good film but the memery we got from it lands it a spot here) > ANH > Force Awakens > Phantom > Rogue One > Clones > subatomic dog shit > TLJ

Still haven't seen Solo.

I've only watched it once so far last night, and I was beyond hyped so my thoughts might change with another go. I thought it was good, definitely not as disappointing as I'm seeing people on the internet so far say. There was a lot I wanted to see more of, and them expand but it's a lot to fit into a 2 hour movie. The ending was a little lack luster for a final boss and

Rey calling herself a Skywalker sounded so dumb and ridiculous.  You finally discover your actual name, defeat the man who haunts the universe with it, and have the chance to now change it for the better but no.

I think it'd all been better if TLJ was directed by JJ, and some of this movie could have been done during that. I felt like JJ corrected a lot of the wrongs in my book from TLJ and kinda made it a movie you really dont need to see for the trilogy.

gotta say i'm not looking forward to another year or two of star wars fans being melodramatic just because a film they didn't like came out

star wars is ruined, just like it was in 2017, 2015, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1983, and 1980

it's just a bit tiresome

I think this film has some absolutely horrendous plot points though, some of which actually sabotage the PT/OT's story.

i just rewatched TLJ just to refresh myself, and yeah

anyone who dislikes this movie has absolutely no fucking idea what's good for the franchise

if star wars fans are pissed about it, that's how you know FOR SURE that it's good--that's the litmus test, i guess

looks like i'll be enjoying episode 9

even from an artistic standpoint, TLJ is multiple cuts above any of the others

YouTube

which of the other movies dared to have weird and unique scenes like this? not one of them

there's only one perfectly legitimate reason anyone could dislike this film, and that's if you're not a star wars fan

Here's a plothole that literally nobody on Earth should care about, but will of course be blown out of proportion by neckbeards

Starkiller base was actually Illum, where  all Lightsaber kyber crystals come from. So where did Rey get hers? Are we bringing synthetic crystals back into canon

Weren’t Kyber Crystals mined on that one desert planet in Rogue One? IIRC that was a semi-important plot point since those powered the Death Star.

Spoiler
not that I am aware of. Clone Wars established ilum as the Kyber Crystal planet and we got reconfirmation in Jedi Fallen Order. Jeddah in R1 was just some kind of Holy Land for Jedi as far as I know unless I forgot or missed something. I believe Cheruit only recognized the crystal from being a force devotee/semi force sensitive

Back on the topic of the movie itself

Spoiler
I am just a little salty that even though we have confirmation that Finn is Force sensitive he never became a Jedi. That would've been a lot to fit into an already kind of cramped movie though.

Also why are social justice types throwing shit fits over Reylo happening?

If they were mad about hyperspace ramming Legends fanboys are gonna be super pissed about the rapid hyperspace jumps. It's cool to see them stay consistent now that hyperspace tracking is a thing though.
