So if you didn't know already I'm Pescetarian which means the only meat I will eat is fish. Well about 3 weeks ago my fiancé lost his job (he got one earlier this week), so we've been hurting big time financially, and haven't really had money for food. My conflict is a coworker of mine and his wife surprised us with a crock pot and multiple home prepared meals thoughtfully and lovingly made, however; it's all chicken.

I know I should just shut up and eat it and be grateful (which is what I plan on doing since we have nothing else), but I'm curious what you guys would do if you were in my shoes?

I'd eat it myself, but there's nothing wrong at all with choosing not to if it conflicts with your diet.

I'm going to eat it especially since one of them is a buffalo chicken type thing (which is my favorite type of chicken), but I mainly stopped eating beef and meats like chicken because of how many hormones they pump into them. I know it won't kill me to eat the food given to me while I'm broke as hell. I'd feel so ungrateful if I didn't. They didn't know that I'm pescatarian. I'm worried I might get sick since I haven't eaten meat since June.

Trust me you wouldn't want to eat the fish that come out of the Chattahoochee River. The e.coli levels were off the chart this year due to floodings.

Hmm, this is a tricky one.

I think, given that you have no alternative and that the food is already prepared - so the chicken have already died for it, throwing it away would be a waste of it's death as well as leaving you without food. If I was in that situation, I can't honestly say how I'd approach the food really. I flat out refuse to eat meat, I'll go hungry and I have done if need be but if it was a situation in which going hungry would be more than a day or so and more like a week? Egh.

One thing this does though, inadvertently, I've been pretty hacked off this evening because I found out that the yoghurts I've been eating for a little while now contain gelatine. So I'm pissed that I've been unintentionally eating products from the death of an animal but ultimately there is nothing I can do at this point other than never eating them again. I'm not going to die because it was eaten, I'm not going to have to go to Mecca for cleansing or anything - I just have to remind myself to be more watchful of products that have an ingredients list longer than four words, and add yoghurts to the blacklist. So after a rambly bit there, it puts my conundrum into perspective because I'm not facing a more difficult one such as yourself.

You won't become ill from eating it after a break from not eating it, I mean you might have a bit of digestive discomfort if you suddenly chowed down on a rare steak or something but for chicken in cooking it shouldn't cause you any problems <.<

Yeah when I started swearing off meats I had forgotten that gelatin is made from animal bones, and was pretty upset that I had to throw out my gummy worms. So this is like a internal conflict, and I'll probably lie to myself while I'm eating it and tell myself it's fish.

I'm even weird about how I eat my fish. Like I got this one frozen fish dinner and I realized it was a bunch of fish chopped up and squished together to make a patty I freaked out and refused to eat it. I too have gone hungry for the sake of not eating meat (or different fished molded into one lie), but like you said this would be more of a week rather than a day or two.

Yeah, if it was McDonald's, Burger King, or some other fast/processed food then you'd be in for a helluva a night on the toilet.

The food has already been made, there's nothing you can do from an ethical standpoint. There's no good in throwing it out, and in the position you've found yourself in, it's probably the most sensible to just eat it.

Yeah, gelatine is the bane of my life. It's in everything under the bloody sun and checking packets for the stuff is now an unconscious habit.

It's a tricky thing all the same though, I'm slowly pointing myself towards a fully vegetarian diet and I'm hoping to make the shift in the near future. I've dropped off my seafood consumption down to barebones, but I think it might be easier to just not eat fish unless occasion demands it which is closer to what I'm at now. Equally I don't really like the semi-hypocritical stance that I hold on the matter, where I refuse to eat certain fish but not others.

I think in this scenario the right choice is to eat the food, when one cannot have the liberty of choosing a diet then you just make do with what you have. Unless you live in the far east, it's not easy to eat a vegetarian diet as a pauper.

This is so true... It's really hard to be a vegetarian in the west. I still get weird looks, and my mom actually gets mad at me when I remind her I don't eat meat. She never supported it when I was a teenager because I got really sick when I became vegan because she refused to buy me "special" food (as she put it). Le sigh.

Yup, my mother was unhelpful to say the least and put it mildly.
It took about a year before she got over herself and stopped making it as difficult as possible for me to not eat meat.

Even on here, a fair number of users seem to take it as a personal attack that you don't eat meat. It's just as obnoxious as proselytising veggie/vegans are in return.

Oh yeah I know it's irrelevant because I will be eating it, but luckily frozen veggies are cheap, and they gave us freshly canned greens in mason jars! >.< I am so grateful, I hate bitching, but this conflict was getting to me. It's the social norm to eat meat, and people either don't like change and/or are adverse to different life styles, but this you know.

Just wondering
Is your coworker still standing there holding out a crockpot while you're consulting your internet fags?

I'm basically a pescetarian haha (I'm not against eating other kinds of meat but fish is the only one I really eat more than once in a blue moon >.>)

Although, honestly I'd probably take the food, at least while you're in the situation you're in

>.< I'm trying to tell myself "it's white meat" so it's not as bad.
Chicken is the least damaging mainstream meat you can eat besides fish.

This is true. I originally swore it off because chicken is pumped full with hormones and chemicals, and they live terrible lives imo.
In the context you are putting, that is irrelevant. Unless you can afford some vegetables and fruits.

Oh yeah I know it's irrelevant because I will be eating it, but luckily frozen veggies are cheap, and they gave us freshly canned greens in mason jars! >.< I am so grateful, I hate bitching, but this conflict was getting to me. I needed to get it off my chest, and I know a lot of members don't eat meat either.
Also, canned foods are great for this. Get some beans :3

It's the social norm to eat meat, and people either don't like change and/or are adverse to different life styles, but this you know.
Indeed <.<
