The evolutionary advantage to having a partner is that you effectively have two brains to solve problems with. If the two parties are too similar, the second brain is redundant. If the two parties are too different, common ground, trust and rational compatibility can be hard to manage. Statistically speaking though, couples with more similarity have an easier time staying together.
