Step 4: Use key on black gate.

Step 5: Simply walk into Mordor.

Step 6: Call in my Titan and lay waste to the Uruk army.

Step 7: Climb Mnt Doom with Frodo and Sam.

Step 8: CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!

Because Sauron's essence was part of the Ring, with it still existing, he was immortal.
And basically, in LotR, anyone with power enough to challenge him was leaving Middle Earth, like Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel at the end.
