Istanbul is colloquial for 'The City' and apparently was in common usage, so that's what they named the city in order to break with some past.

The pope was not part of old constantinople. He is catholic not orthodox christian which the Holy Roman Empire was. That is how I believe it is.

The pope was not part of old constantinople. He is catholic not orthodox christian which the Holy Roman Empire was. That is how I believe it is.

Byzantium claimed christian supremacy via the Emperor, while Rome claimed it by way of St Peter and Paul and the foundations they laid there.
