Christmas has evolved.

It's not any one thing. It means different things for different people. For corporations, it means dollar signs. For the neighborhood priest, it means celebrating the birth of Jesus. For people like me, it just means reveling in the spirit.

It really has little to do with religion for most people. It's just a great holiday that revolves around goodwill and joy.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
It's a cultural phenomenon ingrained in the western life now.

If you're American and don't celebrate something this time of year, you're probably a Muslim and aren't welcome here.

Christmas doesn't even have Christian origins, and it's just kind of ingrained in western culture. For example, none of my family are religious yet we still celebrate it.

As if any public holiday has anything more to do with religion then it does to economic gain these days.

I don't know what bothers me more about this kind of comment- how ill-informed it is or how often it is made.

Well, explain, so that I may become informed.

Rockets on my X
Ironically, Christmas in my family has been less about christmas and more about family. It's a day we take to get together to appreciate family.

The real irony being, there's always somebody fighting amongst each other. I have no defining philosophical belief in any specific afterlife, really.

But the day itself is conveniant to celebrate on, if possible, since everything else shuts down anyway.

A flower which blooms on the battlefield
I think that Christmas has both a secular consumerist and spiritual religious form.

Both are legitimate, but non-Christian revelers should recognize the context behind the holiday and its historical significance, as well as its spiritual significance to Christians.

Non-christians treating Christmas like it has "evolved" and no is no longer a Christian tradition are like white rappers using "nigga".
Christmas has lost pretty much what little Christian meaning and relevance it had, though.

It's a hallmark holiday at this point.

Christmas doesn't even have Christian origins
I don't know what bothers me more about this kind of comment- how ill-informed it is or how often it is made.

Well, explain, so that I may become informed.
Christmas was developed by Romans and placed at the date it is in order to hijack pagan holidays of the time. However, to suggest that Christmas does not have Christian origins is ridiculous. Christmas was developed very specifically as a Christian holiday to specifically replace the pagan Saturnalia- not as an evolution of it.

Over time, Christmas took on more and more unique traits, becoming a celebration of Christ's birth down the line. As it spread to western and northern Europe, it picked up many pagan traditions as well as people of different cultures adopted and adapted it to their lifestyles.

However, what has remained constant until recent history is Christmas' purpose- the veneration of Jesus Christ, be that in defiance of a pagan majority or in celebration of his birth. It was not until recently that capitalism and consumerism hijacked the holy day and turned it into an economic phenomenon. Christmas in the form most secular people today celebrate may have little to do with Christmas as 4th century Christians celebrated it, but the day is still holy to Christians and largely belongs to them.

TL;DR all Christmas has in common with the roman celebration it displaced is the date, and the pagan traditions we today associate with it were picked up later on as new cultures adopted it.

Well, I stand corrected. I think what I meant to say is that holidays like it existed before Christmas came about.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Well, I stand corrected. I think what I meant to say is that holidays like it existed before Christmas came about.
You'd think the 'Christ' in christmas gives it away <.<

I thought it was an amalgamation of other holidays and didn't truly have much originality, actually.
