It's just people are using the cookie cutter version of zombies. Also, depictions of zombies nowadays are too casualized. It's not how it used to be, where zombies resembled bloated corpses, more macabre depictions basically.

If people were more creative and made zombies into something fresh and compelling......for example, a young woman gives birth, but throws away the baby into a dumpster......the infant is reanimated from a parasitic entity, the parasite grows so large that the ever weeping, silent infant is but a small part of a monstrosity that eventually adds the mother to it's body, and so on and so forth until many people become a part of the parasite.

I'm all for giving aliens a greater role in horror movies. There's so much room for expansion.

Zombies can't return from the dead. The infected in IAL don't deteriorate physically, and they still retain memories and connections to former friends/family (ex. the alpha's connection to the turned woman Neville was experimenting on).
