Can you think of any good movies where the creative process was impacted by substance abuse?

I have this assignment where I need to analyse multiple pieces of media, and my question inspects the impact of substance abuse on the creative process.

I can pretty easily come up with stuff for music, but I'm drawing a blank on films. I could think of a few movies that use subtance abuse as their topic (Wolf of Wall Street, Requiem For A Dream), but I have no idea if the creators were necessarily influenced by substance abuse while writing it. I think DeNeiro and Scorsese drank and wrote a movie together (they mention that in an episode of Community) but I don't know which one or if that's even true. Turns out, I should be mostly judging the content of the art itself rather than the context of its creation, but my teacher is in love with my question and doesn't want to see it changed, so she's opened up my options to documentaries and non-fiction films. She suggested something along the lines of the Kurt Cobain documentary or a Johnny Cash film that I can't remember.

Any help would be fantastic.

Great book and movie. It's about an undercover cop under the influence of Substance D (fictional drug). PDK said these capsules are the "everything" drug. The characters display different mental disorders as a result, such as schizophrenia or dissociative identity disorder.

I'm more so looking for the artist being under the influence of substances rather than the subject matter simply being drugs or alcohol.

Ex junkies from the DAA UK influenced the creative process on Trainspotting, advising Danny Boyle on what it was like to get high on heroine so he could translate it into various scenes. They actually make a cameo in the football (soccer) scene in the intro of the movie.

I've not seen Trainspotting and have heard really good things about it so that may be useful. Do you have any interviews that specifically relate to my original question? I'd like to familiarise myself with the context of their input before deciding on the movie.

When PKD made the book, he was living in a home surrounded by drug abusers. The characters in the story were referring to the ones he lived around. The director of the movie implied the same.

Could you provide some material for me to look through so I can review the actual context of the artist's situation? Interviews or the like would be perfect.

At the end of the book/movie, names of the drug influenced individuals were given off. PKD's name is also displayed on the list.

Turns out that this movie wouldn't work, because the main character isn't an artist -- it's a police officer. Technically, I'm supposed to be judging the content of the film, not the creation process (this is my fault, I misunderstood the parameters of the assignment).

My teacher is enamoured with my chosen question and has opened up my options to documentaries as well. She mentioned a Kurt Cobain and Johnny Cash documentary, but I'd rather do someone I like. That might open up suggestions.

You asked for a movie where the creative process was impacted by drugs, I assumed you meant the creative process of the movie, not a creative process displahed in the movie.
