Im not gonna explain that much.

all that needs to be said is that in a bored internet lurking state: links were clicked, and gifs were found...one gif had a certain horror related character playing a song, in a dark corner, staring at someone...and at 11:00pm its terrifying...i didint stick around for a jumpscare i bolted...so...

someone explain how a gif, a moving image with no audio, could play audio. what sorcery is this?

Gif is located here.

http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/846060-my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic

EMBER pointed out that some users upload videos embedded in the background or in the description of a image to play when it loads. so someone took the toredor march, placing it on this image and effectivly catching me off guard to the point where i stayed up till 12:30 trying to figure out how a gif played audio...its been a boring saturday...
as for the link? its a long, long story...

Gifs can't play sound as far as I know.

It was probably a Webm, which can play sound. Or an SWF.

so, that means that it wouldint work on mobile, ok that makes sense, i asked a friend who was on mobile they said they heard nothing...so that clears that...

but wait, they also tried it on their computers on chrome and it didint work, so how or why did it only work on my computer so far?do you think its something with the way my settings are configured for chrome?

As far as I'm aware SWF files should work the same on all browsers. It uses Adobe's Shockwave Flash to work. But I could be wrong.

I don't really know much about these things. But.
Sometimes, certain files don't work on certain browsers.
I remember I had an alt on Bnet, when I posted a link from that on one browser, it wouldn't appear properly on the other.

That's the only thing I can think of.

If it was a swf, Flash is tempermental. Might be that.

if it were uploaded as a swf wouldint the end of the image (example:.jpg .png .mov) say .swf instead of .gif?

If the file was created to be a swf, then uploaded as a swf, then it should stay as a swf file.

like a video?
i guess ill go into detail
the image was the FNAF bear thing standing in a dark corner of the image, eyes peering out...let me explain again, i was browsing know your meme for funny images cause its been a boring saturday evening. and after links were clicked, i came across some fnaf memes, which were surprisingly pretty entertaining...i knew i should have expected jumpscare. i clicked a suggested image, one that had been posted in the MLP gallery for some reason, one character was sitting adjacent from the bear in the dark, eyes glowing and flickering...and worst of all? the toredor march playing loudly...at night...for me? terrifying...

but the extension said .gif so how did that happen?

Well you could upload it as something else, though I don't know why you would want to. If thats the case then it was either user error or the website's fault.

well its either user error or the websites fault that im not sleeping tonight...which is just great...im intrigued by how it happened and really want to go see how but everytime i click the link i feel like if i scroll down the gif will go full screen the second it "ends"...its a strange fear i know but still...

wait im confused are you implying the user uploaded it has something else (which is most likely the one you meant) or did you just suggest i upload it here (which is just a big pile of NOPE)

I was suggesting that the person might have made a mistake uploading it too the site, that or the website screwed up with the file itself.

ive come to the conclusion that the OP of the image may have possibly messed up the image resulting in one with audio being uploaded as a SWF named a GIF file by accident. thanks internet...but regardless, still made me jump a bit. volume was loud...

well its either user error or the websites fault that im not sleeping tonight...which is just great...im intrigued by how it happened and really want to go see how but everytime i click the link i feel like if i scroll down the gif will go full screen the second it "ends"...its a strange fear i know but still...

wait im confused are you implying the user uploaded it has something else (which is most likely the one you meant) or did you just suggest i upload it here (which is just a big pile of NOPE)
I was suggesting that the person might have made a mistake uploading it too the site, that or the website screwed up with the file itself.
ah...yeah chances are he had messed up, maybe if i opened the image in a new tab and checked the end of the link for an extension...in the morning...
Link? I could look into it.

do i just...post it?  alright...quick explanation because the link is awkward....i have no idea, as to why this image was in this image gallery. this image did not involve the topic in this image gallery. dont ask. its a long long story...have fun headphone users...(cause i dont know if theres a scare hidden in the gif...i didint stick around to see.)

long story, dont ask why that says MLP. if you want to know what image im referring to, then hopefully the image link is good. i copied it fast then bolted...
That would be a gif file mate, gifs cannot contain sound.

but...i swear...it played audio....how did it...i heard the song though...did you wait around the gif for a bit? maybe the audio was muted ( im actually pretty creeped out now, no one else but me has heard this song from this gif now....and that actually scares me a little...for multiple reasons...)
I found the problem in the comments, the website does not allow for that file type, or so it seems. Not a problem on your end, just the site's.

*raises right hand, places other on heart*
swear to god. no joke. audio played and my volume was so high that i almost broke my chair. for reference the audio playing was the toredor march, the song that appears in the five nights horror game when the player loses power...

if there was no audio, then did i just hallucinate the audio symbol appearing by the X button for closing a tab?

Gifs can't play sound as far as I know.

It was probably a Webm, which can play sound. Or an SWF.

so, that means that it wouldint work on mobile, ok that makes sense, i asked a friend who was on mobile they said they heard nothing...so that clears that...

but wait, they also tried it on their computers on chrome and it didint work, so how or why did it only work on my computer so far?do you think its something with the way my settings are configured for chrome?
As far as I'm aware SWF files should work the same on all browsers. It uses Adobe's Shockwave Flash to work. But I could be wrong.

if it were uploaded as a swf wouldint the end of the image (example:.jpg .png .mov) say .swf instead of .gif?
If the file was created to be a swf, then uploaded as a swf, then it should stay as a swf file.

im 100% sure the file was a gif....so that, explains, nothing...apparently another user i showed (on Bnet) said something about a comment involving the file and changing it or fixing it...
Well you could upload it as something else, though I don't know why you would want to. If thats the case then it was either user error or the website's fault.

so the site sometimes messes up and runs the script to play the audio and sometimes doesint or...the site just messed up and played the swf instead of the gif? or something i totally missed....

I did that and I didn't get any audio.

Nah, nevermind, I thought wumbo was doing something fun, but the comments ruined it.
