Here's what I would do. I would write an essay about denial and about confirmation bias. I would talk about how both of those can twist peoples' minds so that they shape the world in the way that fits their ideal image. They use it as a means to dismiss harsh truths, and in doing so, they allow themselves to view said people as heroes instead of the thugs that they were.

Rodney King I can maybe see being called a hero. Not because of what he did, but because of what happened as a result of what he did.

The other two I have no idea on how you could possibly call them heroes. If you want to highlight African American heroes in the US there are plenty of legitimate people to write reports about.

I don't know, that's a tough one to bullshit your way out of, because what he's asking you to do is bullshit in itself. What kind of college forces you to write from a specific viewpoint on a subject, and not let you choose your own?

If you really have to do it focus more on Rodney King, then when mentioning the other two compare them to as many white martyrs/heroes as you possibly can and criticize how they fall short of those white folk.
