Ha. I remember reading one tale of how he pushed a woman down the stairs for talking too much, resulting in her death.

His dislike for woman always seemed really out-of-character to me though, considering how "progressive" he was with most of his other beliefs.

We knew the world would not be the same.
A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.
I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita.
Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty
and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says,
"Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.."
I suppose we all thought that one way or another.
this guy was definitely gay

Quote
He conjectured that homosexual impulses were implanted by nature in adolescent and elderly males because, although they have sexual urges and can procreate, it is undesirable that they should do so, and therefore the urge is diverted. This, he thinks, is why homosexual activity has been widespread in all known societies. The manner in which he writes about it suggests that he had felt homosexual impulses himself but had not given way to them.

What's your favorite work of his? I have a small hard cover copy of his aphorisms next to my bed I got a couple days ago, I like his views on religion. I got "the world as will and representation" a while ago and tried to jump straight into it but the very first page is really bewildering.

Definitely "The World as Will and Representaion". Took me a few times to wrap my head around some of his ideas, but it's his best work by far. I'm actually planning to learn German so I can read it in its original language. I've heard the concepts are a bit lost in translation, which could explain why he's a little more spiritual/supernatural on the surface than he actually is (in reality, he was a vehement atheist).

If you get the chance I'd check out "The Basis of Morality", too. He wrote it as a response to a competition a local university was having IIRC, so it's not the mental trek TWAWAR is.

If you have any sympathies for the vegan crowd, he touches on it a bit in there, which is what initially drew me to him in the first place. Anti-natalism, too, but that's usually more of a turn-off for people than an attraction.
