Spoilervery hardI hate picks so much. I'll have to use one soon because I might be playing in a metal band (I think) where one of the songs is almost impossible to play without one.

What song?

Go to a large music store (you don't have to buy there) that has lots of inventory and try out a bunch of different body styles, neck profiles, and of course, electronics. Don't "just buy a Fender P" unless they feel perfect to you. Around that budget, Ibenez has some good models. ESP's LTD B series is really awesome too. I got a 206SM for a backup to my fancy Schecter, and it's nearly as good tone wise for half the price. Speaking of Schecter, I'd personally avoid any of their lower models, but the Studio and Custom series are pretty awesome. I've never felt a slim neck that's as easy to play as the one on my Stiletto... definably out of your budget though...But yeah, just try a bunch of different basses and see what you like, and what suits the music you play.
