The same way learning anything works.

You consider yourself a scholar, no?
When I want to know about anything I look it up and I read about it, and then I read about the interesting things related to it, continuing ad infinitum.

I got started doing research on fiction and characters I wanted to know more about on various wikis, and the transition into facts just seemed natural.

As for documentaries, I recommend The Men Who Built America.

It's a satisfying blend of drama and documentary, that goes just a little beyond what traditional documentaries including dramatizations do, painting a rich picture of late 1800s America and the astonishing individuals who brought it (sometimes kicking and screaming) into the 20th century. It's about six hours.

And of course, there's always Drunk History which covers a broad range of subjects, comically regaled to us by intoxicated historians. It's a light way to learn the gist of a historical story in twenty minutes without bogging yourself down in tedious detail.

Honestly? Play games set around historical times where factions and events are based around said events. Makes it far more interesting for me. Movies not so much cuz you're not as engaged in the world.

Got interested in ww2 because of Cod

WW1 Because of both Battlefield and Verdun

Antiquity in general because of Total War

Japanese Warring states (Sengoku Jidai) era because of Total War once more

Migration period of Europe/Fall of Rome because of Attila (I didn't know who the Saxons, Geats, Franks, etc were until this game got me interested in em)

Chinese 3 Kingdoms because of Dynasty Warriors (I know this isn't accurate, but I read up on the period in general after).

More or less a bunch of stuff like that. Of course I do like history in of itself when it's just presented right, so I will watch some documentaries at times of things based on what drew me in, in the first place

To further luci's point, if you're  not studying periods of time that genuinely interest you, youre not going to want to learn anything.

On another note, if you want some interesting history stuff Verb, Extra Credits has a series on it with stuff I never even knew/I thought would be interesting. It's not always accurate to a tee but the general idea of it all is. Plus the animations make it interesting, and it's not bogged down in super series music and a deep voiced narrator.

If you want I could recommend you some

What period of history do you find most interesting, if at all?

Also, most history documentaries are complete crap and are very inaccurate/misleading, so, I'd say go about it someother way.

I'd recommend the Extra Credits Extra History videos on youtube if you're looking for an easy introduction into certain subjects.

What Luci said is also very good advice regarding getting into a historical topic. Video Games are very good at engaging my interest in history, and the Total War series especially is exceptional at this due to the constant stream of little tidbits of information about the world you're playing in that provide you threads of investigation that you otherwise would not have known about.

I personally found the Viking DLC for  Mount and Blade: Warband to be another good example of a video game that provides this sort of thing.

i've always found assassin's creed games to have a 100% accurate representation of the historical time period they're set in, and seeing as i'm a historian without a degree, i would trust my opinion

i studied wars, inventions and political conflict a lot for the novel i never finished

the rest i didn't give a shit about, but since like 90% of history is war and political conflict there was a lot to keep me interested

Just become an entertainment history fag, way better

Spoiler
Do you support this constitution?

Of course-

Then defend it.

...and what if you're backing the wrong horse?

Burr. We studied, and we fought, and we killed, for the notion of a nation we now get to build. For once in your life, take a stand with pride! I don't understand how you stand to the side-

I'll keep all my plans close to my chest...

(wait for it, wait for it)

I'll wait here and see which way, the wind will blow...I'm taking my time, watching the afterbirth of the nation! Watching the tensions grow...

So much better than a documentary. You lose some truth and get some embellishment/untruths in exchange, but at least this kind of stuff is watchable

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Try to see the details of historical events as part of a much wider narrative which can help inform social, economic, political or civic action.

There you go. If you wanted something in Roman times, choose the Punic Wars. If you want one on Japan, Sengoku Jidai is pretty cool on the characters he dives into, but the one he apparently put the most work into is Justinian and Theodora, which is basically the Eastern Roman Empire, after the West had fallen.

The hidden bonus I enjoyed was The Broad Street Pump. It's about John Snow (I know) and how one man more or less changed how cities were built. It's a shame they don't teach this more in schools.
