Jellyfish aren't fish--I'm still calling them jellyfish, because calling them cnidarians (as cool as that sounds) would be weird and nobody would know what I'm talking about. And calling them "jellies" just sounds dumb.

except jellyfish is the actual common name for the species in order to differentiate it from other actual species

and in this case chances are most people aren't going to know what a "demisexual" is because it's not an actual sexuality. it would be like if you made up your own name for jellyfish and only called them that within a small circle of people and you know and then started proclaiming it's the actual commonly accepted name for them

Marine biologists prefer that you call them "jellies" because they're not fish in any way/shape/form. "Jellyfish" being the common name doesn't make it any less technically wrong--it's just that nobody cares.

I'm not aware of anyone proclaiming it's the commonly-accepted term--just that it is a term that can be used if you please.
