If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
There is the threat of killing off native species of the modified plant if it "escaped" into the wild, but most companies have covered that by making the plants sterile.

Of course, that brings up a problem of a reliance on the company to produce the GMO plants every time, and could enforce a monopoly.

Otherwise, they're great.

So why is it that organic foods are always advertising that they're GMO-free? Is it just a marketing ploy or is there something about GMOs that make them bad?

Some people just like to eat all-natural foods.

Like Irish said. GMO's have the potential to disrupt native ecology. AKA the Monarch Butterfly going onto the endangered species list practically overnight when they began eating GMO crops. Second, while GMO crops are sterlized to prevent spreading, this, handy enough, like Irish said, generates a monopoly. If your crops never regrow after one harvest, then you have to buy more. Maximum profit on the company selling it and a complete dependancy on them.

Third, with laws being introduced that restrict home grown foods these days, all this leaves are the companies. And while GMO's are sterile, companies keep taking over more, and more land, effictively blotting out any original crops to be had, which therefore in conjunction with current laws, makes the majority of the populace completely dependant on them, and therefore, subject to whatever the company wishes to do.

You'd be a fool to think that GMO's are completely safe. We discover new things all the time, for example, plastic test tubes. They dilute samples by leeching some of their compounds into the sample. It could mean years worth of botched results and diluted outcomes. Cancers, are discovered all the time from things that were previously thought safe.

And fourth, as GMO usage rises, and replaces natural foods, it leaves us open to a major plothole. Stagnation. GMO's are identical. There is no variety in them. There's no flexability to them. If something ever devolped that could target GMO crops, we'd be fucked.

And fifth, which is a simple personal matter. I've had both GMO food and organic, natural food. Organic will always beat it.

I don't give a fuck if you can grow a GMO strawberry that's 5x the size of a regular stawberry. It has no fucking flavor to it. It's just a pile of tasteless vegetable matter when compared to it's natural, albeit smaller counterpart.

GMO's aren't the devil, no. But they are being abused and it's just another dam waiting to break its banks.

Nothing. There's nothing wrong with GMOs.
Ah, another one drinks the kool aid.

And genetically modifying organisms through things like breeding selection and such is fine. It's existed for ages. But the modern GMO only exists due to poisonous chemicals and toxins changing the molecular structure of the plant. In other words, stay away at all costs. People who actually defend Monsanto and contemporary GMOs are brainwashed, simple as that.

You don't have to be a doctor to know that cigarettes are bad for your lungs, just like you don't need to be a biologist to know that Roundup-sprayed plants are literally poison.

Save for one thing. GMO opposition is heavily downplayed and generally, tried to be stifled and swept under the rug. Most people don't even know what a GMO is if you ask them. You have to do a bit of digging to figure out what exactly a GMO is, let alone to wager that it's bad.

I guess that's true, but I generally see the GMO enablers as knowing that they're terrible for you, but choosing to keep consuming their Cheetos and shit out of laziness anyway.

I always buy organic, but it's not like I'm going to impose that on others.

Right. Standard procedure in the industry then. Now. Question.

Do you know what crop desicating means? Off the top of your head. No google or wiki. You should know this. Cause this one's a kicker. Almost as bad as GMO's. Worse, even.

Of course, that's partly what I was referring to earlier when I said "roundup-sprayed plants". GMOs and herbicides are both terrible, but the true threat is when they're used in conjunction. Especially once you learn that Monsanto's main goal is to eliminate heirloom seeds completely, so they would have a fucking monopoly on FOOD. And if our government doesn't grow some balls and kick out Monsanto lobbyists in Washington, heirloom seeds will be illegal by the end of the next decade.

And he bats it outta the fuckin' park.

You got it partner. They're even making laws now. British Columbia. It's now illegal to own a garden in the city. Even if it's on your property. Over here in my province. Farm eggs not registered under a company name are illegal to sell in a business and illegal to distribute.

If there were ever a true example of corporate slime, those food companies, oh boy.

Keep eating those natural foods class. Stay classy.

What the fuck, are you serious? And here I thought that the US had it the worst. Something really needs to be done, but the industry has quite skillfully spread the idea that anyone against GMOs or pesticides is just a tinfoil wearing conspiracy theorist. It's messed up.

Yes sir. I've never told a lie here. Maybe spun some dramatacism up with honeyed words in the past. But never lie, no. This is barebones truth. My country is right in the middle of a battle with expanding corporations.

My province is in the process of being converted, along with all the others in Canada, and our government, current government I should say, our prime minister, bends over backwards for corporations and american politics.

Marketing ploy. If there's a market for people who believe GMO's are the devil, then organics are going to sell. Like when food has "Free from MSG" when IIRC MSG is banned anyways for certain foods.

I trust GM food enough to eat it, but of course there's always room for doubt like anything else, although in my case it's more background politics and economy stance rather than a health stance.

@SC and Sandtrap:
They banned growing your own food, or selling your own produced food? I could sort of understand if it's the latter because lack of health regulations (I mean some idiot could be spraying bleach on them to stop bugs eating their carrots...), but a ban on growing your own fucking food for your own consumption is frankly retarded, and I really hope it isn't the case.
