They were all just stand ins for Gene Roddenberry, who prior to creating Star Trek was not only a pilot in WWII, and a police officer in LA, but he survived a commercial plane crash, pulled survivors from the burning wreckage, and led them through the Sudan to civilization, saving many lives.

He was in two other crashes during the war, and these experiences were the basis for Star Trek.
