For most people, "prequel" implies a direct connection to a later story. Your mention of the new trilogy implied there was a direct connection between The Force Awakens and Rogue One.

Well there potentially could be. I haven't read anything that implicitly stated if it would have a connection to the new trilogy. Who knows maybe it will have a character in common or something of that nature.

Possibly, but, if anything, it's a prequel to A New Hope.
