One is knowledge on how things actually work. Things like people, systems and things like that. The other is on the theories, hard sciences and intangibles.

Ideally a well balanced person would have both. Nearly no one does.

1) Which do you feel is more important?

2) Which do you have more of?

See you Cowgirl,
Someday, somewhere
I think you mean experience.

Having real experience and being book smart both have their advantages.

Asking which one is more important is silly.

I'd say I have a pretty well-rounded base of knowledge in both areas, but I probably lean more towards book smarts--my inability to do certain things, like drive and get a job, have hindered a lot of potential life experience I could and should have at this point, but my intense anxiety isn't really doing me any favors.

Book-wise, my weakest subject is history, by far--both in part due to my terrible education in the history department, and because the subject bores me to fucking death, so I can't exactly teach myself shit without falling asleep. There's also more practical things to be learning about.

The only thing you can do with history is argue with people about it, which doesn't really seem like a fantastic use of time--and the debates themselves are always mind-numbingly uninteresting. Like, debate about something interesting--like who burned down the Reichstag, or something. Fuck.

Long live NoNolesNeckin.

Ya fuckin' ganderneck.
I think it's important to be able to discern the truth in all aspects. However discernment is more-so tied to wisdom than it is to knowledge. I feel like what people call 'streetsmarts' is a product of developing wisdom, and in that regard I believe I tend to value it a bit more. However, 'booksmarts/schoolsmarts' are still vital to one's core intelligence, and I respect people that have a lot.

Can't history also be used to trace the precedents of current effects and make predictions about future events?
I mean that's why I bother learning about it (most of the time).

I guess they can. I view those purposes as kind of niche, though, and they're not exactly for everyone (including me).

In my experience if I'm learning about history it coincides with some kind of interdisciplinary knowledge. I don't think I've ever learned about history on my own time unless I thought it was necessary to predicting or understanding parameters of something else other than history. I guess I view it more like a kind of indexing tool than a standalone field of interest.

No shit. I'm currently in the process, but it's still going to take me a long time to muster up the courage to go on the road.

It's also not beyond practical. It's just regular practical.

I'm better at academic stuff. Like, I could give a pretty good conversation on something like particle physics or computing, but I don't really do the whole social thing well.

well it depends. do you live in a city or something where you dont have to drive around, or in an area where everything is out of walking distance?

The latter, with the exception of my university.

The biggest impetus I have is knowing that I'm a burden on others. Normally, I carpool to college, but if my crew is unavailable, I usually have to get my mother to drive me instead. Embarrassing, and burdensome, but that's why I'm starting to learn.

People act like I can just get a license whenever. No, uh, I have to actually learn first. And I'm not one of those faggots who just wants to get a license and be done with it--I want to be absolutely sure that I'm comfortable on the road, or I'm never driving.

well, it's pretty much needed to read the book on your state traffic laws and such, but the only real way to learn "how" to drive is just by doing it. I can understand why someone would feel kinda timid to drive, but it's not that bad. the biggest key is to know EXACTLY where you're going and what lane to be in.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Book smart over street smart.

Sure having both would be nice, but it's easier to pick up on street smarts after a few mistakes than it is to learn the "basic" principles of a certain subject well after a young age.

E.g. How to use geophysical properties to find oil and other important resources. Also, knowing what geophysics is, and a few "basic" principles. Can't really do that from common sense or knowledge of street scams (or whatever street smarts give you).

Both are equally as important, street smarts to get you the connections you need, and book smart to maintain a job with those connections in mind. A lack of either can screw you over.

emigrate or degenerate. the choice is yours
Daily reminder that 'street smarts' is a meme created by spazzes who couldn't get into the uni they wanted in order to feel better about themselves.

It's essentially just common sense, which everyone apart from sociopaths and the mentally handicapped have.

Well, and the autistic. Unless you file that under mentally handicapped, which would be a little harsh imo

because obviously there's a lot of autistic people who aren't mentally handicapped at all; they just cannot function socially whatsoever, etc. etc.

School can take you through the red tape and restrictions of our nifty little engineered system.

Street makes you aware of the real world beyond our fake nifty little engineered system.

Ideally it's better if you have both. You can navigate the red tape but you're not niave to how the real world works.

Well, I'm not really up for the red tape world and I don't care much for it, although I've done stuff in the past to find loopholes around certain legal restrictions. As for street stuff, well, I tend to stay away from people as much as I can.

I'd probably have more in the sense of book smart. Then again, I can haggle with folks to a decent degree.
