one thing i will always feel guilty for were all the craneflies i killed because i was terrified that they were mosquitos the size of my palm

they aren't mosquitos ;_; how could i accuse them of that
Who cares? They're still bugs. They're still disgusting.

I'm technically an adult, but I still go out of my way to kill insects when I see them.

That's pretty damn cruel.
Insects are literally scum. They can't feel pain, they can't even think. They don't deserve to even exist on this planet.

See, I don't like insects either but they do deserve a place here. They evolved, fought and grew (kinda) to earn a place on the planet's biosphere to the point that the world's ecosystem would collapse without them.

I'd be willing to let that happen. Seriously, people blow the whole insect necessity myth way out of proportion. Humans can pollinate. Low-tier mammals can eat things other than insects. We can breed animals and plants without them.

Also, I'd like to add that insects do feel some kind of pain, as they react negatively to stimuli typically regarded as painful.

eh i like to think that if a creature enjoys eating and mating and isn't intrusive that i ought to leave them be. i mean i could kill them because theyre icky and holy shit fucking terrifying if flying at me, but the act of killing them usually is pretty icky and unpleasant itself (except for well, ants and mosquitos, which I killed in troves). craneflies in particular heh, those things bodies are like 80% spring killing them with a napkin takes several checks.

Refer to my above post. Humans can pollinate and grow plants ourselves. We can breed and consume animals ourselves. We've superseded the need for a food chain when everything can be done artificially anyway.

It's neither. Give me one reason against it. Like I told Korra, humans have passed the need for any kind of rung on the food chain.

And you, you're completely disregarding just how critical insects are to life on Earth. I suggest you do some grade school-tier research on how food chains work before spouting nonsense like that.

Okay then, let's just wait till the bees don't buzz anymore and no more good and tasty organic honey is made.

Insects produce some things inherently, sure. Honey is a good example. But their main purpose is food for other animals, something that humans can synthesize anyway. And yeah, I'd be willing to give up honey if it meant no more bees.

I'm not biologist but most of them respond to bodily harm in ways similar to higher level animals, indicating they have some sense of desire not to experience something. "but thats instinctual behavior patterns!" So is your repulsion of insects. There's a reason this elicits a different response than this.

We. Don't. Need. A. Food. Chain.

It is somewhat possible to survive without the food chain, but quality of life would be greatly reduced. Most plants would die, we would rely on genetic engineering to grow crops, CO2 levels would increase drastically, people in developing countries would be completely fucked over, and so forth.

Even the disappearance of honeybees that is happening right now has severe implications for life on this planet.

Like I said, plants don't rely solely on insects for pollination. Trees don't either. Animals, wind currents, etc do a lot of the work there. And once a tree is already planted and growing, it doesn't need insects in any way.

And lol, no. You don't NEED genetic engineering. Ever tried to grow an organic tomato crop? Did you need insects to do it?

Without proper preparation to accommodate the disappearance of it the food industry wouldn't respond fast enough (because you're essentially creating an industry in a week's time) to not have people starving to death.

Sure inevitably things would stabilize, but that's not the point. The point is we couldn't sustain what we currently have without those things.

You're wrong. Many plants solely rely on insects for pollination as other species do not pollinate nearly as much to sustain the species. Even if a tree is planted and starts growing, it will eventually die.

Believe me, no plant would die out if insects disappeared. Pollination would still continue in extremely limited forms, and the subspecies of the plant that adapted to non-insect pollination would eventually become the dominant form of the plant.
