I hate you, I really, really do

Seems to be a bit of a hot topic as of late. Let's talk about it then why not?? What with the Large Language Models and image generating techniques, not to mention audio too. I'm sure you've seen examples on twitter and stuff.

It looks like the big three; music, literature, and pretty pictures are being hit simultaneously. And many artists are understandably confused and lashing out in strange yet feeble ways.

Maybe they should have internationally unionised when they had a chance! Now - a sorry state.

We can assume (for better or for worse), that AI will continue to get better at what it does, be it narrow or general. These temporary stop gaps the artists conjure up will not be enough to address the core of what is at stake here. It is lazy for artists to paint those who are advocates of this technology as 'AI bros'. Instead they need a united philosophy to enshrine the power of human made art, should it be in their interest to do so!

Thoughts?

If your work can be replaced by AI then I'd think it probably wasn't much more than the artistic equivalent of popcorn anyhow.

It is naive to think that any artist's work, regardless of their caliber, cannot either : a) be replicated flawlessly or b) be superseded entirely in the near future.

Assuming of course that AI of this creative nature continues on the trajectory it is going, which is not an outlandish assumption to make by any means.

There are already cases with AI generated pictures winning art competitions and literature being generated in a similar fashion that is indistinguishable from the greats, etcetera etcetera. If you had made this comment two years ago, I would have agreed with you but now it simply no longer holds.

However that fake Drake song genuinely had me terrified and impressed at the same time.

I'm not that worried about it

I think artists will be eventually use AI as a tool to create art. Just like how artists went from cave paintings, to carving rock, to painting on canvas, to creating digital media. Over time, people will adapt. The only problem is that it will probably put a good number of people out of a job now just because of how rapidly the technology is developing but over time, I don't see it becoming a problem.

I am of the mind that people who can be beat by AI should be beat by AI. Like the writers strike pretending that they are of great importance for making MCU capeshit and black Cleopatra. Those people should be replaced. I wonder what kind of legal protections will be put in place for people. I think people will license their likeness so that AI songs and art can't be made without their permission or at least getting a cut of the profit. But I don't know about dead people like Frank Sitara getting their likeness used to make AI songs. Maybe their likenesses will become public domain.

I can't really speak in regards to AI because I don't know enough about it.

Long live NoNolesNeckin.

Ya fuckin' ganderneck.
Maybe I should be more worried since I'm an artist but I'm not that much. I do feel for the artists whose work was basically stolen without their consent to train the AI. For me, I just like creating stuff. Just because a computer can create doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to stop wanting to.

True! Very unfortunate that millions of artworks all across the internet were fed into these data sets without consent. And maybe coexistence is an option after all? What with both computers and people like yourself being able to create without conflict.

‘The most inoffensive user on this website’ - Verbatim
The precedent for the job market has been pretty clear over the last few decades imo.

Anything that can be automated will be, and the revenue sure ain't gonna be going into the pockets of the people who used to work those jobs. Art and entertainment is just the next thing to be hit.

AI itself coming to the table isn't really a bad thing in a vacuum, but I imagine it's just gonna be abused as a tool to add a new genre of profession lo the peasant class while record labels and production companies get to have an even easier time making money for free.

The chance to actually stop any of this probably vanished decades ago tbh. Though can't blame anyone for organising.

I love you, son.
AI shouldn't be replacing any artist, even if they are subjectively perceived to be "bad" at their job.

I think AI is fine in cases of like Spiderverse, where they used it to add lines to character's faces depending on viewing angles etc. But using AI to generate the art itself is not valid. Especially when AI doesn't actually have any understanding of what it's doing - it's just superficially mimicking whatever is in the training set.

I remember listening to some discussion a while back about a guy who won an art contest using AI generated work, which outraged a lot of people(artists likely). But he neither hid that it was created by AI and he spent something like roughly 80 hours filtering through generated content and stitching elements together to create a comprehensive piece. So in his own way, he put the work and time in. But that's superficial as fuck. Art isn't about time put into a piece.

Here's what I think the outcome is. You know how vintage shit sells for high prices? And model replicas of vintage shit can also sell for high prices, but rarely the same as the real deal? That's what AI art will be.

There'll be a market for the original "organic" hand/person produced shit, and there'll be a market for the high quality replica stuff. But again, this is all superficial shit, and I'd suggest to any artist complaining about AI work denting their profits that they stop and take a look at whether or not they're actually an artist, or just a very good craftsman selling their trade.

There's a difference because art's not about the money, and it doesn't matter who else makes what, or what makes what, because an actual artist plays the game for themselves. When I make art, I make it because I want to, or I want to see if I can. I test myself, I express whatever's left of me as a person either as emotional representations, concepts and ideas, or just going with the flow. You could fill the markets with AI art and it wouldn't bother me because I'd still be tinkering on my own time, making shit not with the intent to sell it, and even sometimes with nobody in mind to show it to.

The only real threat AI art poses is to the tradesman who calls themselves an artist.

There is

Document review, file sorting, and permit issuing

All the mindless tedious work that's normally pushed to interns are all getting done by AI now

That's also why medical diagnosis is also getting done by AI
Anything that requires a lot of repetition and memorization is getting done by AI

The real problem is people conflating illustration with art.

AI cannot create art because art is part of human expression. Art is a medium by which people can communicate their emotions to one another. If the primary goal of an illustration is NOT to communicate emotions, then the illustration isn't art.

The people who are under threat here aren't actually artists. they're career illustrators who have always been more interested in the paycheck they get from illustrating professionally than in the merit of producing a piece purely for artistic expression.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you think an AI is even capable of filling the role an artist is actually supposed to occupy in a society, then your view of art is mostly economic and your idea of an artist is mostly professional, and you kinda missed the point.

Not like I don't feel for all the illustrators who invested years of their life cultivating the skills to work in this field, but when you consider that art is not economic and professional illustration is not art, it's pretty obvious that what's happening here is more akin to auto workers being replaced by robots, and less akin to the well of human culture being poisoned by a scifi eldritch horror we cooked up in a lab.

I'd like to renege on this opinion.

The man will use AI to replace all artists and entertainment to make sure humans can only work menial labor jobs.
