Not gonna reply to any individual posts since I'm sort of late to this thread, but I feel like I should address this.

No, we don't ban people in Sapphire "just because they disagree with us." In fact, we have several active members that aren't communists at all.

Arguing in Sapphire is ok, shitposting in Sapphire is ok. What will get you banned though is arguing for the sake of arguing/stirring up shit. If it's clear that you're only in Sapphire to "troll" and not be a part of the community, you will get banned. If you roll up into Sapphire and start using slurs and being a bigot, you will get banned. If you're new and not familiar with the rules, you'll probably be warned first, but if you keep it up then you'll get banned.

This may seem strict to some of you here, but this moderation policy is what's kept Sapphire strong since 2009. We keep out negative people that are detrimental to the community, and it gets us free publicity via all of the assmad posts that people make in other places.

Also, it's very rarely that we even hand out perma's anymore.

The only two that I can think of within the last year or so have been Davos and Beb.

I should check Sapphire out again and see what it's all about. I have an account there still. I got invited to join the group back in the B.old days and left the same day I joined because of how horrible it was (apologies if anyone here takes offense to that but it really did fucking suck) which I believe landed me on some blacklist. Memories, memories.

You're welcome to join again.

The do not invite list/blacklist from the b.old days isn't really in effect anymore.

Just to throw my opinion/experiences in, neither of the experiences I had in Sapphire were that great. The first was on Bungie, and then later on their offsite. On Bungie I got banned for respectfully disagreeing with Jay. That's just outright what it was. I still have the screenshot. I wasn't rude, I wasn't inflammatory in any way, I simply expressed a different opinion and I got the ban hammer. I believe this was 2013, but I'm not certain. It was before Sep7agon, that's all I know for sure.

They could've taken the opportunity to "educate" me for being ignorant or whatever, but they didn't. Jay exploded at me for daring to say that the news was focusing way too much on race, and the reaction was an immediate ban because I dared to disagree with Harlow's little princess.

Second experience was on an offsite, under a different name because I didn't want to get treated any differently if they happened to recognize me. Jay was gone, and I wasn't banned. I just stopped posting. In both experiences Sapphire was not a welcoming place, though it definitely pretended to be. They've always seemed to have this huge ego about themselves where they seem to think they're much cooler than they really are, and other than the long ban list I really think this is the source for why so many people hate them. This community is more cliquish than any other I've poked my head in, and the echo chamber effect makes it hard to want to stay around when you're already an outsider being new, and having dissenting opinions can make people more distant and even hostile towards you. They claim to be open and receptive to people they don't agree with but this simply hasn't been my experience. They will try to make you feel like you're either a horrible or stupid person.

So there ya go. That's my two cents.

I second this shit. They're douche canoes, and honestly, I'm glad that that I don't hear from Harlow anymore.

Hey Sep7?

Thanks for making this thread popular. I haven't had a good popular thread in.... years.

Anyway I'm out for the night. 10 hours of work tomorrow.

It's not a profanity filter, it's a slur filter.

If you feel the need to constantly use slurs because freeze peach or some non sense, then fair warning Sapphire probably isn't the place for you

There are several practical instances where using a slur unfiltered would make having certain conversations about certain subjects run a lot smoother.

Given the context, our minds will be able to fill in the blanks anyway, so having a filter doesn't actually filter out the word at all. The only effect it produces is making the website look like it's comprised of small, overly-sensitive children.

I agree with Verb on this. I'm not the type to use slurs, but having to protect the minds of your members from even reading them is pretty overkill. Especially for adults. You can't have a genuine serious conversation about anything really without the risk of offending someone. People need to be able to handle exposure to the things that upset them, even naughty words, or life is just going to be exceptionally hard.

Sapphire can do as they please, but it's pretty obvious to me that it just isn't the kind of community for me.

Had a look around and don't think it's for me. The ideology is extreme to the absurd (literal NK & Stalin apologetics, no thanks), the groupthink and echoing is massive without any real discussion of any substance, and it both strikes me as kind of boring (a handful of people talking for the sake of talking, even much more so than this place) and indeed not too welcoming (if not hostile) to new people. You guys do you, but I'm going to bail. Perhaps I need to stick around longer to get the full idea, but this is what it comes across as to me. If this counts as "badmouthing" deserving a ban under your policy, then feel free to do so. Account name is just "Flee".

Sapphire isn't for everyone and that's fine.

Thanks for checking us out. And no, this doesn't count as bad mouthing.

The thing is, we have many members that come from minority groups (people of color, gay people, trans people). They have to hear/see these slurs both in real life and in other places online, and we want to provide a place where they don't have to worry about seeing these words.

Call it censorship, call it a safe space, call it whatever you want, that's just the type of community that we are.

We manage to have conversations on several sensitive subjects without using slurs

It's not that hard.

It's not about it being hard. It's about the impression that it creates.

You should be able to handle reading words that you dislike. You're all adults, presumably.

Yeah I get that, and have nothing against anyone who just feels like they need a 'safe space.' I just have more respect for people that can handle things that are meant to offend them. It shows a greater degree of mental stability and strength and that sort of thing is inspiring to me. Having dealt with a number of mental issues throughout my life, and having watched family and friends battle the same (some to the point of suicide), I have a keen interest in those who have a greater degree of control over their emotions and their mental state. It's the main reason (not the use of psychedelics as some people like to think) that I became interested in eastern philosophies like Zen Buddhism and Advaita.

It really is just so stupid on so many levels.

Obviously, you've bred up this community of a bunch of people who are as unracist, unsexist, and unbigoted in every way as can be, right? You're all so wonderful and accepting and diverse and you're so proud of it. You're so proud of the safe space you've provided for all these minority groups, and you would never think to denigrate anybody for any aspect of their identity.

All the more reason not to have the slur filter. Because you're not gonna be using those words anyway. And anyone who does is going to get banned instantly. So what the fuck does the filter actively accomplish?

Holy shit.
