Generally the rule of thumb is to not care is to not respond. When you exert the extra energy it means you're putting in a certain degree of thought and importance so as to show people the light, or so to speak. Minuscule or not, there's still a certain degree of caring in there, otherwise you wouldn't be acknowledging the existence of it.
