"Ornate chandeliers suspended from a vaulted ceiling lit the spacious chamber; Jack tilted his gaze overhead and noticed how far away they were.  His thoughts wove around those bright lights, like a dance of ether masses spiraling in precious unison. Why must we try to clutch desperately for the mere threads of this world when we can clasp onto a tapestry of untold magnificence beyond this plane of existence?"
Thoughts?

If so, I think we're not likely to ever permanently leave the solar system; any colonization of other celestial bodies will most likely be limited to extracting resources.

Probably a selected few and rich individuals will leave the planet and either succeed or fail in finding a new e-arth to live in

Elysium

Matt Damon will rescue me from the harsh Earth life and glaring plot-holes

Hopefully humans go extinct with the purpose of making room for the next stage in evolution for homo sapiens. It doesn't seem likely we'll be able to travel to a different solar system any time soon, though.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are
How things are going. I see a depopulation event occurring before we find a 2nd home. Either by human means, or natural means.

Goddammit Goji, it would have been perfect!

OT:
>implying an advanced space faring species(which we would have to be to consider switching planets) ought to ever live in a gravity well

Oh noes the one penny I give to NASA is too much, screw scientific advancement.

Entrepreneurs (private investments) most likely.

I am always around, but never seen. I am often avoided, but you can't out run me. for I will come when you're old and grey, or maybe even the very next day. I will come with cold embrace, and give you rest with a chilled kiss on your face. I come in many forms of emotional state, whether it's irony, love, laughter, or hate. I am everyone's final fate.
There's the moon of Jupiter, no?
Plus planet X.

the one true God is Doctor Doom and we should all be worshiping him.
At this rate it's more than likely. Though, personally, I'm rather surprised humanity lasted this long already.

It's rockets, we need better engines. We need gotta go fast engines. It's just too slow to transport a suitable amount of resources to anywhere else in the solar system right now.
If you want to get out the solar system, you need ftl travel.

The main limiting factor right now is engines.

I think you guys are very severely underestimating the staying power of species. Our particular species has been on earth for around 50000 years, and we're spread all across the globe. I'm not discounting all of the nuclear destruction theories or whatnot. Just sayin that, statistically it's highly unlikely for a species of our success to die off so soon. Literally the only surprising thing about our existence given our success as a species is how we lucked out back at Toba.

Civilization, on the other hand...
