This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Of course, parents needn't be together in order to care for the child. Indeed, one can be totally absent from the child's life, and still be legally mandated to pay support fees.

Basically, I want to ask a series of questions about the issue, to see where people stand:
- Should both parents be consulted prior to an abortion?
- Should the consent of both parents be needed for an abortion?
- If the consent of only one parent is needed, is the mother's desire for an abortion more important than the father's?
- If a man wants the mother to have an abortion, but she doesn't, does he still have an ethical "duty" to the child?
- If a man wants the mother to have an abortion, but she doesn't, should he be allowed to revoke any legal obligations to the child - such as paying child support?

Yes. The fetus isn't part of the mother's body, nor is it her property. It's a medical decision in which the parents share legal guardianship.

No, and that's not without recognizing the inequality of physical responsibility in pregnancy.

This should be decided outside of the abortion discussion, but I think both parents have an ethical duty towards their child from the beginning.

I can see a lot of people claiming they want an abortion, knowing the mother will say no, just to get out of it. I think what you're really asking is, 'should child support be optional?', to which I would say no.

Father's consent is irrelevant to an abortion. It's a matter of bodily autonomy for the female.

That said, the biological father SHOULD have the right to "opt-out" of parenthood during the pregnancy, and thus be exempt from any legal obligations to the mother or the child.
