You know, if I could go out like that, I'd be more than fine with that. I'd probably love every minute of it.

Don't break out the pitchforks here. But I was just doing some thinking. As I read over the article, something occurred to me. The very sad usage of the word "hero." It's not undeserved for what the guy did. And I wouldn't argue that he's not a hero.

But I don't enjoy how easily the word or title is slapped on by the media or the government. Somebody dies these days, and they'll likely be called a hero if they were killed by somebody else. And I think it's sad how meaningless it is. The only people who really are going to remember that person, are the close circle of people who knew them.

The only people who will remember them long after the media has done its drivel and shared the news around the world, long after their government put out a statement and held some kind of commemoration, will be that close circle of people. It's sad to me because it seems so.....orderly.

"Oh x person died from x cause, they're a hero. Terrible news, sorry to the family for their loss, yada yada okay bye now."

And then that hero effectively dissappears and is largely forgotten while the people who cared for them are just left to wander on. We've got graveyards and mountains of bodies worth of people who were all claimed as heroes and then casually forgotten over time.

And all the while, people continue to remain ignorant to what and why those people died for and continue to perpetrate a seemingly endless cycle of stupidity and violence while it's the dead heroes who pay for it.
