Except it's not. The person who has the kid the majority of the time should get the alimony, and that's usually (rightfully) the mother.

Most of them are.

Purely anecdotal but I can tell you that my mom was a huge fuckup of a parent and pretty much did nothing but harass my father and I for a good while over anything she could. I'm not sure if my personal experience is in anyway reflective of a trend though.

Neither parent should automatically have the children, the one best able to support the children (not just financially, but also by not being a shitty person) should be given custody.

Well obviously anyone who is proven to be bad at parenting shouldn't be given the children, but it happens all too frequently because of the assumption that the mother is just going to be the better parent so they never bother looking into it.

They don't though, the parent who can care for the child best does.
That factor is entirely unrelated to the gender of the parent and is to do with what sort of person they are.

In light of all this wonderful bickering, I just have one thing to say in light of your arguments class.

You need both parents to properly raise a child. Because both parents are different, they provide key aspects to their child that cannot be provided by just one parent. In a functional family, both parents bring things to the table. Fathers provide in their own way.

Mothers are usually softer, and gentle. And fathers provide the push and drive for their kids. This is, ideally, in a working family. Both males and females take from their parents, both of them. Lack of a second parent destabilizes things and it becomes somewhat of an issue.

I might agree that mothers have a softer nature to them. But dads contribute in their own way.

And, you're forgetting one last thing. Mother's bond stronger with a son, than with a daughter. And likewise, fathers bond stronger with a daughter than with a son. It revolves around our protection instincts and the fact that opposites attract.

As a son grows older he's going to clash with his father, and likewise, a daughter will clash with her mother. Switch the parents around, and this usually doesn't happen.

Of course, this all hinges on a functioning family. But still. My point here, is that both sexes are needed. In a breakup, you can't pick sides based off of one sexes qualities over the other. You have to choose who would be the better parent to try and manage alone.

Such is not often the case, however.

Going on the assumption that it's true, that still doesn't encompass all of the things a child needs to grow up successfully.

Role models, Discipline and Inspiration for example, particularly in the case of boys they get this moreso from the father figure than the mother figure. That's not to say one gender can't do the job of the other in this case, but simply mollycoddling a sprog tends to result in a little emperor/empress.
